My name is Ryan Wells. I'm the owner of a local fish store in Lindon, Utah. The best
way to reduce or even eliminate nitrates in a saltwater fish tank is through consistent
water changes. Nitrates are a natural build up and the end process of the nitrification
cycle. The way these build up is usually commonly from fish food, fish waste or other organic
material that is decomposing in the tank. Make sure that you have enough live rock or
other biological filtration to be able to do this efficiently. Once again if you do
receive a high concentration of nitrates the best thing to do is water change. There are
also a few products out there that will also effectively reduce your nitrates in your system.
However, these are just a temporary fix and do not provide a long term correction to your
problems. By doing constant water changes you are actually taking out a high concentration
of nitrate water and reducing the overall concentration of nitrates in your tank by
replacing it with 0 amount of nitrates in your new clean, fresh, unpolluted saltwater.
