This is Martin Shervington and today I'd like to show you how to use hashtags
and trends
in order to find people with whom
you want to engage.
The first thing to understand is that you’re creating a
personalized global network.
So let's have a look at that first.
If I search
for
‘hashtag’,
which on a mac is ‘alt three’ by the way if you don't know where it is on your keyboard.
‘Commoogling’
And then look for ‘global
network’. I know
that I have
already written quite a few articles on the subject.
So you see Larry Fournillier has shared one here which is ‘Generation plus and teams’.
and Steve Berry shared it as well. Now there's another article which
I will scroll down,
which happens to have a couple of
pandas helping each other out which is called ‘Seven tips on how to build an awesome
network on Google Plus’.
I'm going to click on that post ‘here’.
That will take me to the article
as you can see there's seven steps and and
I won't go into all of this because you can always just search for that
yourselves,
but in essence
you are building your own personalized network
and as such you've got to decide you want to be interacting with.
Now you can be using the ripples and just so you see the ripples again. So we're going to
‘drop down’
on that button
press ‘view ripples’
you can use the ripples to see who has shared specific
content
and as such who you'd like to be interacting with
and who you think are influences in that particular area.
The basic principle
is that you will interact with them; you will be engaging with the people that
you want to engage with on the subject matters that you are interested in.
and then you're going to be building your own circles and then you can be sharing
your own circles so that other people can find those people.
So there's a little bit more detail in the article but let's have a look at
a few more factors on Google Plus starting with hashtags
and trends.
As you already know
hashtags will help us find content
to which we relate.
And so will key words exactly the same as in Google search.
The additional things that consider is that there are actually trends that occur
and we can find those on Google Plus as well. So
let's go to the home screen first.
As you can see on the home screen we have
a list of trending on Google Plus.
And today happens to be Halloween. So we can see that's number one and it's going up.
Ask
Cher
is static. That's a little dot and you can see window Wednesday is going down.
Jar Jar, that's a Star Wars reference. And Taylor Swift is a singer.
So we have five trends on the Home Screen.
Now if I click on the explore button
we have additional trends that will appear
so
we can see that we have the initial five, but we have five extra.
So this gives us an idea of what is being hash tagged
and what's being discussed
on Google Plus.
If I'm interested in a Halloween for instance I can click on ‘Halloween’
and see what posts have been made about Halloween. Eileen O'Duffy has
put a post out
relating it to Ireland. Somebody has a
scary looking squirrel
and so on,
all the way through the stream. So effectively
these
Hash tags
can turn into their own stream.
If I save this search
you'll be able to find the search a little later on so I can use this again. So this
is another way of having almost like the ‘circle’ stream you can have a
stream you just look at
if it's of interest to you for that day
or for
that subject area.
I can also and this is the really important thing -
I can find people who
relate to the same subject matter.
And when I do that
I can then contact people
which I'm going to show and interact with them, engage
with them and build the relationships.
Let's use the example Star Wars Tuesday. So I've hashtag searched ‘Star Wars Tuesday’.
We have a stream here of content that people have put out with that hashtag.
And you can see that hashtag here which is why it's showing up
now, you can put several hashtags
because when it's related to several subject matters, you can draw
more people in
if you use appropriate hashtags.
If I want to make sure this doesn't move from this particular post I can press ‘pause’.
That will pause the stream.
I can then look at the ‘Future Star Wars’ movies and watch that video
in Google Plus itself.
If we enjoyed the video or want to acknowledge that it's there
then we may Plus One it.
And we might leave a comment as well saying
“Niel's
great post”,
for instance.
And also if I wanted to I could begin to interact with Michael and say
“Excellent find Michael” if I think that he found it first.
and tag his name as well.
There we go. Eventually found his name there.
so then they will receive a notification and I'm beginning to engage with them
I'm not going to do that quite yet so what I want to do is just show you if I share
the post by clicking here
the person that showed it to me.
So if I make a comment to my
network “Great post
check this out.”
I can then ‘hat tip’ it with the h/t before the person's name.
And this is just the way of acknowledging that the content came from that
particular person so scroll down and click their name.
Also, I may decide to add in the hash tag as well. So I look at what was
already been hash tagged ‘George Lucas’,
‘Disney’. ‘Star Wars’. ‘Star Wars Tuesday’.
and I think I'm going to add in ‘Lucas Films’
and we see that the options come up, and I go down to Lucas Film and I add that
one in.
Now that will help when anyone searches for ‘Lucas Films’ for this post to appear.
Now, as you can see when I added in Niel's name here, I
see in the box down here. So I want to make sure that I also add in to public
if I wanted to send it to my circles or extended
circles or specific circle, I could do that as well.
But now we're ready to go.
Just before I do press share, I'm just going to check that this is engaging as it could
be.
In fact I'm going to put some ‘bold’ into the text. So I'm going to do this by putting asterisks
there
and also going to ask a question “What do you think?”
And I'm going to ‘underscore’ there which will make it italics when it comes
out.
This way I start to engage people a little around the content that I'm putting out.
Then,
when I'm ready to go I can press the share button.
Okay one last example of using hash tags. If you use the hashtag of ‘science’
and we see this stream here and I'm going to pause the stream if we scroll down we can see that we have
‘Curiosity’.
And we have
news on a dying star.
And let's say if I find I'm interested It's one of my interest areas, I can scroll over
To Randy and
add him in
to a particular circle. And I might decide to add a ‘science circle’ in.
And I can create that
and add him in.
Very straightforward. So what you can do is use the hash tags to find
people, add them into your circle and that way you're going to have the ability
to engage with them more easily in the future.
So hopefully you now know how to search
and find people with whom you going to relate and engage around whatever
topics and subject areas passions and the locations in the world
whatever you're into, you're going to be able to find them.
