The field of multimedia is vast and what's exciting is that it's everywhere.
My name is Brian Knoth and I'm an assistant professor of multimedia here in the art department.
After graduating with my Bachelor's in psychology I took a job with a psychological research start-up.
We were developing interactive multimedia applications and programs to supplement psychological
therapies. So that led me to pursue a Master's degree at Emerson College in media arts.
I took a job there actually managing the multimedia production studios. A big part of the job
was helping students with their projects and through that process I learned that I really
enjoyed working with students helping them troubleshoot whatever issues they had.
I was part of those moments where the students really got things. I applied to a PhD program at
Brown University and I realized that if i really did want to teach I might need a different
kind of advanced degree. I think some of the most important skills that my students are
developing are being open to, I think, experimenting, being creative, thinking outside the box.
They also need to lose that fear of making mistakes. There are so many possibilities
and so many options for the students. What it does is help them develop a skill set that
is going to make them really flexible over time. They may be doing one thing for a couple
of years and they might have to shift gears but that's the whole point of education is
that it prepares them for a really dynamic workplace and a dynamic life.
