the first thing we got to do is to drag the
the TRAILER bookmarklet icon
into the
web browser
bookmark bar
and to test that by clicking the icon on the bookmark bar.
This will take me to the TRAILER
log-in screen where I can login to the system by typing my username
and password
in the login box
and that takes me to the TRAILER
Informal Learning Collector
now this is the system
that initially collects all the data
that you submit
when you add a resource
into
the TRAILER system.
So let's try that now:
browse to a resource that you choose.
let's click on the
TRAILER
bookmarklet
to
send into the TRAILER
Informal Learning Collector.
So here,
I'm browsing to a google video about adding a bookmarklet
and i'm going to submit this to the TRAILER system
by clicking on the
bookmarklet icon
so as soon as I click on the bookmarklet icon
I'm taken to the TRAILER
ILC
login screen
and I'm invited to type my username and password.
Basically what happens in the ILC
is that the files that you submit with your
bookmarklet button
go into a big queue.
What they're waiting for is for you to add details about
the kind of competency
and the type of activity
that you've undertaken
in engaging with this particular resource.
So, it might be a resource
that provides evidence of something that you can do, for example
and so you would be expected to add
the competency details:
"what it is that this is showing you doing".
On submitting a resource to the ILC
I am invited to go to the ILC list to finish "configuring your pending informal
learning activities"
I can click on that link,
and when i do
I'm presented with the list of
the activities which are waiting for me
to add
competency information,
so that i can send them to my portfolio
where they can be analyzed and organized.
As you can see here,
there are quite a lot of
activities and resources that have been added to the ILC and
the resources are always added into the bottom so I scroll to the bottom of the
page
and I can see
my latest activity that i've added
and then alongside it there are two buttons: one says "delete activity"
that the other says "edit
and sent a portfolio"
that's the button I'm going to click now.
When I click
"edit and send to portfolio"
I get
a number of input boxes
where I can add extra information
so, for example,
there's already a title set, which it has received from
the actual title of the activity
I can select
what kind of activity this is: whether it is a URL or maybe it's an image
or youtube video.
I can add tags
to describe
what kind of activity this is
then
I can add details about the kind of competencies
I might be
claiming for this
particular type of activity
and I can type in comments
about the type of activity
that I've just submitted.
Actually
to just move things on
i needn't type any of this information at this stage
and I can just scroll to the bottom of the page
and click on the button which says "send to portfolio"
so that's what i'm going to do now.
When I do that
my activity is removed from the list of
activities in the ILC.
So where's it gone?
what's happened, is my activity has now been sent
to the
TRAILER portfolio system
and it's in the TRAILER portfolio system
that you can configure
your activities
and you can organize your competencies
in ways where they can be presented to
different groups of people.
To see the portfolio system we have to login
andthe portfolio system is
at a different URL
which I have to type into my web browser.
Once I'm in the portfolio system
there are a number of icons along the top of the screen
which allow me to
view my profile.
I can get an overview of my activities
and the competency that I'm claiming for those activities by clicking on the overview
button.
If i click on competencies
then i get a list of all the competencies
that I've claimed
for the activities of I've submitted
in this list
I can add new personal competencies which I might want to claim to some of the
activities that I've submitted.
If i click on the "activities" tab
I can see all the activities
that I've added
the activity that i've just submitted
from the ILC
is in this list
and I can edit it
to add extra information
and to
add further details about the
competencies that I'm claiming for a particular activity.
In the showcase manager
I can create presentations of my activities
with their associated competencies
for view by
different groups of people
so for example I can create a showcase for my employer.
Finally
in the "peer recommender"
I can find other people who have similar competency profiles
to my own.
This is a useful facility
for finding people
we might want to collaborate with
in the future
or who have
skills which are complementary to our own
