They are the biggest animals ever to live in Planet Earth
They weight more than 170 tons, equivalent to a Jumbo 747 airplane.
Their heart is as big as a passenger car....
...and to live they need to eat more than 40 million krill shrimp, every day
In La Paz, Baja Sur, Mexico, there it is a museum about this magnificent, but kind, colossus of the oceans...
The Whale Museum in La Paz, Mexico
...has an important collection of Whale skeletons, siphids and dolphins...
and it's an Ecological Education Center, where tourists, students and visitors can see up close and personal...
...this mammals... - Only in the Sea of Cortez, there are 30 species....
...so here in the Whale Museum is one of the best sites to spread the knowledge of this wonderful species...
...and promote conservation, their study, research and join the community in environmental education.
The museum has an exhibition which includes the smallest cetacean, the Phocoena Sinus...
...all the way to the biggest animal on Earth, the Blue Whale, now the crown of the collection....
...which required a huge labor in order to preserve it for exhibition.
- We needed to remove the flesh, soft tissues are eaten by the marine animals....
...bones then are prepared, cleaned and then we raise funds in order to make a display like this...
Now the Museum is working hard to enlarge the collection...
- We are working on two Tropical Whales, one Orca Whale, and one Humpback Whale....
...and we recently called for preserving a Bottlenose Dolphin and we are working on that too.
- Those who work hard at the museum are volunteers, and give their heart and soul...
None of the museums workers earns a wage, we make it for the love of art, our students are our biggest pillars....
...high schoolers and college ones make their social service with us, working to give back to society their education...
...and they stay with us after their service, we are so honored by that....
...they know and compromise on community projects, where satisfaction is not receiving a wage for a job well done...
- Finally, Francisco Gomez, Museum Director, tells us about why whales and dolphins should be protected.
-First is about respect, we have to take it as our responsabilty, but they also are an important....
...part of ecological balance in the planet, specially oceans. Having one species leave the ecosystem....
..automatically the whole planet could get into an environmental chaos.
The museum is located in Navarro St. between Altamirano and Gomez Farias, in La Paz, Mexico.
- Ecologic Education, Impressive Skeletons, and lots of surprises, in the Whale Museum of La Paz...
