Our team has been around in the Seattle area since
the early nineteen eighties under SiFu Mak Fai we we've been performing
everywhere until about like 1996 the established official Mak Fai Washington
Kung Fu Club in Seattle's Chinatown. My name is Royal Tan and I'm the lion dance
instructor at Mak Fai Washington Kung Fu Club. When you performed the lion
dance you have to forget yourself and you become the lion and you act like the
lion. Lion dancingis important to me because is a huge part of my culture.
In the fifth grade it was an assignment of talking about what I wanted him to be in the
future and my answer was to be a good line dancer.
about 47 to 50 shows. 2016 year the monkey it's more busier. Especially during tough times and
busy times are like Chinese New Year season it gets pretty hectic so they are
always there to step their game up and you know come out of what they usually do.
Sometimes you know kids nowadays you can become leader sometimes but when they
see that I'm kind of in a situation where I'm having trouble.
The'll come step your game up here to help me and support me through the tough
times. I think I have to know how I got left and right hand I always depend on
if available I'll go to them if they're not available I'll go to others but I
have Kevin and Jackie which is like my go-to guys. So lion dancing is a pretty huge
part of Chinese culture. I did some research I found out that I started
about 1,700 years ago.
It used to always be just like you know Chinese New Year festivities just to
bring good luck and scare away evil spirits to welcome in the new year. But
nowadays is performed for all types of events.
It's hard for others to be on the
same page and same boat as me but you know sometimes lion dance can be one of
my main priorities but then that's not how it is with other team members but
sometimes I can tell they know how I feel that's why they they show up
because they want
give me support they know that you know we we have big shows coming up we have big
things big plans to to make our team better than the they show up but it's
also hard when they show up but not everyone is there so it's like i don't
want to waste my time I don't want to waste their time but I feel like you
know any time I put in its worth it
