We start by going to the the Crafton Hills College website at www.craftonhills.edu
Next we go to the Current Students tab and select Library
Here we are at the library homepage. You can find basic information here about the library, like hours, contact phone numbers, and links to library services.
Since we're going to search for a book, we want to selcet the Book Catalog link from the quick links menu.
There's several ways we can search for books, including author, title, subject, keywords, and call number. Let's search by subject.
This is the screen we will do our subject search from. Let's type Global Warming and click submit.
Here's our results page. You can see there are several listings for global warming, but most of them have longer descriptions.
These descriptions are sub headings of to the main subject of global warming. For instance, environmental aspects of global warming, fiction books about global warming, and childrens books about global warming.
For now we're just going to select the general subject heading global warming.
As you can see the catalog brings up a list of titles to select from.
Since CHC shares a book catalog with San Bernardino Valley College, many of the titles on this list may only be available there.
If you find a book that's only at SBVC you can speak to a library staff member and we can have it sent over for you.
However if you need a book now you will want to make sure to search for books only at CHC. Let's find out how.
You'll notice at the top of the screen there are several dark blue buttons and one of them says "Limit This Search." Let's click on that.
As you can see this page offers us different options for limiting our search. We're going to select the one entitled "Where item is located."
Here we have the option of selecting Crafton Hills College which will limit our search to titles ONLY available at CHC Library.
Now we're back to our results list.
If you look to the right side of the screen you can see the publication year of each of the titles, so if you know you need a book published within the last five years it makes it easy to choose which ones to look at.
Let's select this one from 2011, the first title on the list.
When we click on it a new screen opens with the bibliographic informaton for the book.
It gives us the author, title, edition, page count, publisher's description, chapter headings, and more subject headings as well.
Anything listed in blue hypertext is a clickable link. For instance if you were to click on one of the other subject headings it would take you to other titles in the book catalog with that subject heading.
At the bottom of the screen you will see information about where to find the book.
There's the item location which we can see is CHC Book Stacks and the Call Number which is what you will want to write down in order to find the book on the shelf.
You will also notice a box entitled Status. This tells us if the book is actually on the shelf. Here we can see that the book is Available.
Other possible descriptions here would be Missing or Lost and Paid which would indicate that the book is no longer available for check out.
You may also see a date listed. This would indicate that the book is currently checked out and due on the date listed.
If so you can ask a staff member to place a hold on the title so that when it is returned we can contact you.
There's much more to learn about using the book catalog, so if you have any questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask any staff member.
