Tennis has given us amazing matches that we want to remember forever.
What if we could get these memories back, and interact with them?
The idea was to track each ball trajectory from start to finish,
until capturing the match in one single image.
But we wanted more, we wanted to interact with the match, and visualize it from any perspective.
could it be done?
The challenge proposed to us was to extract all the trajectories
the thousands of tennis ball trajectories during a match into a 3D model.
And all this, in real time.
So, what we did was to design a semi-automatic software in Processing,
that we called The Ultimate Tennis Tracker.
This software would help us detect the ball's trajectory
and withdraw a large amount of data.
After tracking all the trajectories, we used Cinema 4D to model the 3D mesh
that displays all the information from each match.
That way each player's pattern can easily be seen: If he plays deeper, fails more, etc.
This could even become a very useful tool for trainers or players.
The result,
a 360ยบ multi-perspective online platform
that makes it possible to interact with each set, game
and point
visualize the best points in video
see where the ball lands... ...choose the color of the trajectory for each player
or decide the speed of the mesh's rotation.
Until a few years ago, visualizing this amount of data would have been impossible.
Fortunately, today we can use HTML5 to convert browsers
into audio-visual platforms.
With the help of WebGl and real-time 3D rendering,
we're able to visualize the matches from any perspective.
This is just the beginning of a new way to experience this sport.
