Hi, this is Gloria Mukonkole, international student in International Economics and Development.
I decided to study at the University of Ottawa because when I finished high school, I planned
to continue my studies in a country other than my own, the Democratic Republic of Congo
and Canada was among one of my targets. And choosing Canada, we had to choose a city.
I chose Ottawa, and then I chose the University of Ottawa. What drives me in my field of study,
international economics and development, is the fact that the program is bi-disciplinary.
So I have economy and I have development. The economy subject because I think that the
economy is reflected in everything in our world today: in everywhere in trade, in the
relations between countries and between humans, etc. And development because we need to know
how to apply sound economic techniques to the world we live in. And when the two are
paired together I think we can have a good result. Currently I am enrolled in cooperative
education, coop, and this month I'm finishing my first internship. This program, coop, has
very interesting advantages. It allows us to open up to the world of work, to put in
practice what we learn in our classes, and it helps a lot because they always say that
the theory is different from practice, and I believe it really is an asset that every
student at the University of Ottawa should have. When I finished my formal education,
I would like to work in international institutions like the World Bank, the International Monetary
Fund, and why not the United Nations. This is something that really appeals to me because
of the economic aspect, I prefer the macro- economy field of study, and it would be best
applied in these international institutions.
