Sounds like he needs a new governor [laughs].
This is a really good campus to be on, I think,
because in most situations, I feel like I can approach my professors
in most situations, whereas I know my friends at other universities
complain about their professors being unapproachable.
We're ABET accredited, we have a very good advisory council
that keeps the program competitive based on what the outside market is,
and the college itself is very supportive of the different departments.
I like things that move- things that I can see how they work
so mechanical engineering really fits with my personality.
It's versatile, it deals with energy systems, moving parts,
We are not the mechanics, we're the designers.
It's good to know the mechanics, it's good to know those hand-on things,
it really helps in your understanding.
I know it certainly helps me when I can hold something in my hands,
take it apart, fool with it, turn it over,
but ultimately what you learn here is
how to take an idea and then refine it so it becomes what you need it to become.
Overall, to be an engineer, you have to be creative.
If you can't be creative, you don't belong in this field
because you have to see a solution or be able to think through something.
When they say you have to think outside the box, that's essentially
what we have to do every day.
And sometimes the solution to a problem isn't always apparent.
And that means you also have to be fairly persistent with what you're doing.
You can't just say, I'm done with this, I'm tired of it, I don't want to do this anymore.
When you're doing something, it's not always going to have a
nice solution that comes out in an hour.
Sometimes it could take you several days to figure out how something is going to happen.
I want to work on an assignment before it's due,
I want to get it done, butI want to manage my time
so I can take a break and go out and have fun.
If I don't, I know I'm going to get frustrated by what I'm doing
and feel like I'm not getting anywhere with anything.
As far as my other classes, I enjoy taking humanities and general education classes.
I have taken more than I need to, but I find it gives me a break
from all the science and math when I can discuss something that has a lot
more leeway as to a right answer or a right approach to the solution
of a question because it gives me a way to stimulate myself
in something I'm not looking at doing for the next 40 years.
It's something I can relax and have fun with,
rather than, I have to know this so I don't put people in danger.
