Southern Sudan is undergoing many changes. The largest of these recent post-referendum
developments is the tarmacking of the 192 km Juba Nimule road. This construction also
includes the rehabilitation of 8 bridges between Juba and Nimule and is the first major paved
road to be constructed in Southern Sudan since the signing of the CPA in 2005. The demining
itself took 120 odd weeks. I can’t remember the exact number. And that only finished in
November 2010. We’ve refurbished as part of the project in the early days the 8 bridges
on the Juba Nimule road to get them trafficable as you see out here now, the existing bridges.
And then as a follow up to that, 7 new bridges were constructed and finished in 2009. September
2009. And bridge 8 which is the border bridge with southern Sudan and Uganda is currently
under construction and will be finished in April of this year. A speech by his Excellency
President Silva Kiir. I’m happy to be with you on the inauguration of the first highway
road tarmacking from Nimule to Juba. I’m happy because this road is the lifeline of
the people of southern Sudan. The Juba Nimule road is southern Sudan’s highest priority
road linking Juba with Uganda. It is the most efficient route to the port of Mombasa and
Kenya, will catalyze business transactions between southern Sudan and neighboring countries.
When completed it is estimated that traveling time between Juba and Nimule from 8 hours
at the beginning of the project to less than 2 and a half hours.
A speech by Ambassador R. Barrie Walkley, U.S. Consul General in Juba. It’s a great
pleasure to be part of this memorable day to mark the start of tarmacking the first
major road in the history of southern Sudan. I am thrilled to join all the dignitaries
present to inaugurate the tarmacking of the Juba Nimule road. This 192 km long road funded
by the United States by the people of the United States through USAID is a living testimony
of the partnership that exists between the people of the United States and the government
and people of southern Sudan. The Juba Nimule road is southern Sudan’s highest priority
road. The tarmacking of the Juba Nimule road and
construction of 8 bridges means a lot to the local community. And to the future of the
southern Sudan bringing town to the people is the motto of the government of the southern
Sudan. USAID supports this important step towards development.
