This is my dad's school back in the dark ages.
Back when my dad was in school teachers
taught from the front of the class using
chalkboards and ditto sheets
He still remembers the smell that emanated
from them.
Friday film days were a big deal to us.
During the movie we could chat.
We used to have to wait months to have communication
from friends at gatherings like homecoming and holiday weekends.
This our school today. It is filled with technology.
Everything from cameras and and electronic ID's to keep
us safe. Digital fm systems to help us hear more clearly,
tv's throughout the school to keep us informed and reading.
Back when my dad went to school school some students
were hidden from us because they didn't have a means
to communicate.
Now with communication boards and tablets students are part
of our classes, having conversations
and making friends. It's wonderful!
Today we are on the Long Island Sound
testing the waters for pollution samples, using
tablets in real time to record our findings so that
real scientists can use that data to report and make changes.
Today in our state of the art science lab. We are building
hydrophones for scientist and students to use in
in our COSEE-TEK program.
We are using video cameras to record the behaviors of
belugas whales.
Today our classrooms are high tech! We are using
white boards to engage and stimulate our learning.
Using websites for... Reading, Writing & Math.
The learning is completely visual, stimulating and
appeals to our learning style. Also allows teachers to
differentiate instruction. A method our teacher
calls Flipped Learning.
We use the ipad to record us exercising
in PE class then have that same video used as a class lesson.
Today we are using our tablets, cameras and phones to connect
people world wide to open discussions.
This was our canvas then...
this is our canvas NOW!
We are learning so much more than our parents did.
We are ASD!
