Hi, I'm Robin Roberts and I'm a proud alumni of Southeastern Louisiana
University. Do you see this this? This my friends this is an Emmy.
Excellence in television. Southeastern Channel in just a short amount of time
has won two. Now
I've won three but hey, hey, but I'm proud of my school for winning two.
If you're thinking about a career in broadcasting,
This is the place you want to be. The Southeastern Channel
will get you on your way to where you want to go. And maybe
you'll win an Emmy or two, or three, like me.
The Southeastern Channel is Southeastern Louisiana University's educational
channel on Charter Cable on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
Whereas most college TV stations can only be seen in dormitory rooms,
the Southeastern Channel can be seen by a potential audience of
two hundred fifty thousand on the North Shore.
It's also seen on the web and social media sites.
The Southeastern Channel has Emmy winning staff members who have successfully trained
professionals in television and film industries.
These graduates work everywhere from large market television stations to
networks like ESPN and Hollywood film companies.
I'm a Southeastern graduate. You know I went here, I studied here and
I definitely take the skills with me wherever I go. And I'm not the only one.
There are definitely some of the directors and producers, and other
on-camera talent that have left the station and have gone on to be very productive.
Students at the Southeastern Channel enroll in the electronic media concentration.
And here they gain a wide array of production experience.
You've really got to put your hands in everything. You know, you got to work behind the camera,
in front of the camera, you really got to be a part of the whole experience. And, that to me
was the most invaluable thing whenever you walked in and you could do a little bit of everything.
And it makes you more marketable and makes you more employable. More people want look at resume tape.
The number one thing that most employers are going ask you, "What's your experience?"
College students at most universities have to answer "Well I've had an internship."
But somebody who has gone to Southeastern, who's been part of the Southeastern Channel can say
"I have truly had on-the-job training that can transfer right into an industry job."
In my current job working for Channel Six WDSU, whenever I stepped into table,
coming in as a Southeastern graduate, I was able to bring in with me the
knowledge, the experience, hands on experience primarily, that's needed to
complete the job that I do at WDSU.
When I was looking to get experience within the TV industry, when I was in college,
I literally sat down one day, opened up the phone book,
looked up all the production companies. Looked up all the TV stations in the area.
I called them up. I said "Do you have internships? Can I get involved?"
Because there wasn't a TV station on campus.
With the Southeastern Channel it's so simple. It's on campus. You get class credit
for shooting, for editing, for being a news anchor, for being
on a sports show, talking about sports.
You can tell me that there's a place anywhere within the region like this.
All the while you're getting experience in all the key techniques.
I've be able to learn how to write effectively for television,
how to be concise, how to be clear, how to get a message across to viewers so that
it not only interest them but brings them into the story.
Working here being a camera operator and and editor at times I've worked on
from news to sports, to conferences, concert events, lectures.
For those students who want to go into news, we have the student newscast
Northshore News. Which is won recognition as the top college news cast region for a number of years now.
We also have the news magazine Southeastern Times. And for both of these
news programs students post their stories to the web, just like they
would in a commercial news operation.
Northshore News is a regional newscast that covers
important events and stories that go on for throughout the North Shore short parishes
It's a great opportunity for students to get experience and get training.
I'm thankful for the freedom to go out and pursue hard news stories
and then come back in edit my packages and submit them any and even had the
chance to present them as the anchor
congressman seasonally says enter the flight displaced and hannah atkins all
and i got to have you
parish president ka congress men state representatives
that's huge
for those who want a career in sports with everything from live play-by-play
announcer
to working on the s_p_ in sports ourselves of the big game
uh... with the cover everything from southeastern spores to the local protein
transcends borders
they get the interview athletes like who believes this caller
behind the scenes you thought the coaches
intermediate cup here at the meetings with the press conferences you're at the
games on the sidelines here in the press box a beach in hell was style called
mister still only ten point covered so they say that all these are the
university's men just don't see anybody else be weekend here's won't talk about
student
uh... player played collazo there's been a good opportunity
just interested filmmaking sematech
he's a great show which spotlight student made short films
also interviews student filmmakers
collagen it's another great student program students talk about music movies
celebrities fashion to perform comical saturday night live style skips like
really funny campaigning shows like a lot of um... like really goofy things
that's like a really funny go it's like if you watch the lapd
that was in a class this semester we got to make you know that's a side of the
year
and uh...
or work actually got to be the channels that we know that it's pretty cool when
i can use that
to help me get into the job market after to show future employers i can and i i'd
created something that's been on TV
students in the electron concentration of the benefit of our news from
communication instructors and the southeastern journal staff with decades
needs of the wedding
experience at the national network television level one of the main reasons
why i transferred from out-of-state wise to and can southeastern and become a
part of the Southeastern Channel
they provide three experienced hands on
and walk away what i want to let the states which is so important
the tower
and people that worked up here for the best in the south maybe that some of the
best in the nation's and you can't get that in any other university anywhere
across the country especially the stock market
i mean you're working with emmy award-winning producers you got to
remember their experiences and put some of those experiences
into what you want and that was just something that
still to this day has an impact on the first with his veto they know what
they're talking about
because things about the TV industry in my opinion
are the graphics are going to commercials text fly all across the
screen cool music playing lots of animation
a student at the southeast regional get that experience
to create
graphics basic interest in going to programs rope and spots her box
on industry standard software
these kind of programs are white
people in the actual iniciar use so i need to come out of school prepared for
it so that's why i think i'm gonna have a little edge above some of the other
competition by working here at seven subject
at the selfish in killing of some of the latest most advanced hammer in life but
that's available to students
for production
both on location in here in the studio in addition students are also able to be
involved with multi camera portraits
both as camera people it even as possibly director
i tell you this is probably outside of the network television station
that one before the senate side season people are going to be impressed when a
senior taken see what's it like that it's not repeating small college dot
that's a great
separate college television station that's important spiritual aspect of
what they're gonna get out there people and though we had created some of the
original
original equipment that is here around six
uh... are kind of god if i had this kinda stuff
stuff
stephanopoulos
for summer jobs but have
yes
to be able to do play-by-play
to be able to be with working on programs the awards that you have one in
just a short amount of time
no idea
what kind of of of head start they give so many and this is at the forefront i
mean this is a
missus tremendous and just the m the experience that you're going to get
because it's all about that it's because you're gonna get wonderful instruction
classroom but to be able to actually can certainly appliance less valuable
out on the computer savy walk-ins
walkout graduate millions
which means you know with the job
if experiencing
