Canterbury schools have received a $200 million insurance settlement
for earthquake damage.
More than 100 buildings at over 200 schools
are involved across the Canterbury region.
Peata Melbourne has more.
It's the country's biggest insurance claim in history.
The funds will be directly contributed to the infrastructure
of 214 schools in the Canterbury region.
Work began on the schools immediately after the earthquake,
but damage still visible in some areas after three years.
Now with cash in hand,
repairs and demolition can begin without insurance claim constraints.
An individual assessment was carried out on every school
but the final settlement was negotiated for all 214 schools.
In total they will receive a $1.1 billion investment
in Christchurch's education over the next decade.
Perhaps one of Christchurch's
most complex insurance settlements to date,
but the most rewarding for the kids of Christchurch.
