If you are a first time in college student who has completed new student orientation,
or, you are a transfer student who has met with an academic advisor,
You should have received a free copy of the LSCC College Catalog and Student Handbook.
Do not throw it away, as it is one of the most helpful tools available to you
as an LSCC student. If you do lose the catalog, you can buy another at the campus bookstore for $2.
So, why is the catalog such a useful tool?
First, there is a helpful flow chart on page 35.
As you can see, the chart shows the course progression for all English, Reading and Math courses.
For example, if you are wondering if Calculus has a prerequisite, and what that prerequisite is,
this page answers that questions quickly and completely.
If you are taking a prep math course, and want to know how many more you need before you can take a college-level course,
you can find that answer here as well.
Your LSCC catalog also has a college calendar, located on the inside front cover.
Finding important dates can make all the difference in transitioning smoothly to college life.
Whether it is when to apply for financial aid, when the add/drop period is over, or when the college is closed,
you need to know these dates in order to navigate college life successfully.
Students also must know how to satisfy the requirements for their chosen degree and program.
Starting on page 79, you will find advising guides and transfer plans for all AA, AS, AAS and certificate programs.
These guides not only help you stay on track to meeting your graduation requirements,
but for those pursuing an AA in hopes of transferring to a university,
They also aim to satisfy courses you need for your university major.
As you can see by this example, specific course requirements are either typed in
for you to see on the guide, or there is a blank line for you to fill in with an approved course from that category.
For example, look under the word "Humanities" on this guide.
You see two blank lines, meaning you need to select two approved Humanities courses.
But how does a student know which courses will satisfy the Humanities requirement?
This question brings us to another helpful tool.
This two-page chart lists all general education classes in their assigned categories.
Back in our previous example, you can see all Humanities courses are listed on page 74 in the left column.
Note that Gordon Rule courses are noted on the chart with an astrix (*).
Other categories on this chart include Social and Behavioral Sciences, English, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences
and Math courses. If you want to take a course not on this chart, chances are good the course is Elective.
The final section of the catalog we will discuss is the Course Description section.
This starts on page 136.
If you need to find accurate information about courses offered at LSCC,
what those courses cover, and if there are any prerequisites,
This is the place in the catalog to look.
As you can see, you catalog is a very helpful tool
and can help you find answers to the most of your questions.
