Welcome to the GSLIS Instructional Technology and Design video tutorial,
Creating an SSH Connection to the GSLIS Servers Using Putty for Windows
Putty is a free and open-source program for Windows
which can be used to create a secure, remote connection
to your file storage space on the GSLIS servers
This is called an SSH connection
For those of you who use Macs,
you can use the built-in Terminal application to accomplish this task
First, you'll want to download Putty
the link to which you can find on the GSLIS Help Desk webpage under SSH Instructions
After you have downloaded and opened Putty,
you will see a Connection Configuration screen
In the box which says Host Name, type in login1.lis.illinois.edu
You'll want to make sure Port 22 is selected
and that SSH is the connection type,
although these should be the default settings
Next, click Open
If you entered the information correctly,
Putty will launch a command line shell
and prompt you for your GSLIS username and password
Note that the shell will not show your password as you type it
Once you enter your credentials successfully,
you can check your location by typing the command "pwd" (without quotes)
which stands for Present Working Directory
The response shows that I'm currently in my H:Drive
I can see what files and folders are in this directory by typing the "ls" command (without quotes)
You can use other UNIX commands
to interact with and modify files in your H:Drive and I:Drive
To learn more commands,
you can read our UNIX Tech Tutorial available online
