Greetings!
Welcome back to the musical Kootu collaboration!
Before they start singing, let's cook!
Nivriti, what are you gonna cook for Thareni today?
Paruppu Urundai (Lentil Balls)
Oh, lentil balls?
Alright, what are the ingredients to make this recipe?
Toor dal, soaked in water for 30 minutes
Have you taste Lentil Ball Sambar, Thareni?
Nope.
Lentil Balls?
Nah!
Never mind, you'll taste it today!
What are you gonna do first, Nivriti?
Firstly, let's put the soaked toor dal in a blender.
Should we drain all the water?
Yes, we must drain all the water.
We'll be moulding the ground paste into balls.
So avoid using water while blending the dal.
We've added the toor dal (lentils).
Now we must blend this!
Should we bring this to the consistency of vada dough?
Yes, exactly!
Avoid adding extra water and grind it to a fine paste.
Ok, let's grind it!
Ready!
Are you wondering how I ground this in no time?
If we keep doing everything, it'll consume lotta time.
Then Thareni will chase us from his home
which is why she brought ground lentil paste already!
Just kidding, Thareni!
How're you gonna make this, Nivriti?
The batter is ready now.
Let's add some finely chopped onions and ginger.
Also, add some fresh coriander leaves and curry leaves.
Tear the leaves into small pieces and mix well.
This is for flavor, is it?
Yeah, the leaves will give a very nice flavor.
I've a question for you!
What's the difference between this and Vadai?
Vadai is usually made either using urad dal or channa dal.
I'm making this using toor dal.
Vadais won't turn out well if made using toor dal.
This will not consume much oil while frying too!
So this is very healthy!
You cooked a healthy dish!
She's cooking a healthy dish!
Ok, after mixing well, we must make balls with it, right?
Yes!
Make small balls using the dough.
This will make it easier to fry and won't consume a lotta oil.
You wanna try making one?
How?
Take small amount of dough...
Mix it well
It's like making kozhukkattai.
Don't roll it too much, it'll break!
Make sure it's round in shape
It's like you're catching an insect. Make balls out of it!
This is all I could do!
Somewhat like kozhukkattai
You've done quite well!
We've made small balls out of the batter. What's next?
Let's heat a pan and add oil.
Little oil will suffice...
such that it covers the base of the pan.
We've prepared the balls.
Now, let's fry them.
How long should the oil be heated?
Until it's hot enough for shallow frying
It's hot, right?
Yes!
Let's stir very lightly
Small kids usually don't eat toor dal
If we include toor dal in such dishes, they'll enjoy eating it!
Toor dal has a lot of protiens.
It's good for school-going kids.
I though this girl is an Electrical Engineer.
But, looks like she's an expert doctor!
She's sharing a lotta nutritional information.
This is my mom's area of interest.
I think, a mother is an inpiration for everyone.
That's right!
I've another question.
When you cam to Singapore, what was the first dish you tasted?
I came here when I was in Primary School.
My friends introduced me to Laksa.
I heard it's very famous here!
It was very tasty!
That was the first time I tasted a Chinese-Malay dish!
It was very different, in a good way!
At home, we used to eat only Indian food.
So it was nice to try different cuisines here!
BTW, I've a bone to pick with you, Nivriti!
All the videos that Thareni has uploaded on Youtube...
have gained arounf 25000 to 30000 likes.
How come you've never seen it at all?
Yeah, I don't know how I missed those videos.
You must watch as soon as you go back home.
That's alright!
She says she hasn't watched it. Let's leave it at that!
But, I've told her.
She'll watch as soon as she reaches home.
Lentil balls are ready!
You made only Lentil balls, right? Where did this come from?
Actually, i wanted to show the entire recipe...
but, I wasn't sure if Thareni would accept.
Do I look that scary?
Anyway, I made at home and brought it!
You can eat the lentil balls as such or add them to a curry.
I've prepared Lentil Ball Sambhar for him.
Oh, it can be eaten as it is or added to a curry?
Have you tasted these lentil balls before?
Nope!
Then, you hould try it first!
How is it?
It's good right?
Thareni, it's your turn!
Very tasty!
Tell us how your daughter's recipe tastes.
I'm sure you'll say it's good
What did you learn from Nivriti, Thareni?
I learnt how lentil balls are different from vadai.
What did you learn from him?
I made a dish which is quite complicated to make.
On the contrary, he prepared a healthy dish in 2 minutes
So I've learnt quick and healthy cooking from him!
We can take 2 minutes or 2 hours to cook a dish.
You've helped her get some of the ingredients too.
Thanks a ton!
How do you feel, having taken part in this Kootu show?
This is a very nice show!
People coming from other countries may not know about the local cuisine.
So it's a good opportunity to introduce local recipes to them.
And, I haven't tasted much of their food.
I tasted today! Good experience!
Also, I learnt to cook a new recipe.
Tell us about your experience, Nivriti.
Thareni was an amazing host.
I got to know him very well with ease.
He's let us into his kitchen and cook.
His way of cooking was good too!
I learnt how to cook healthy food quickly.
This is Kootu. I'm Rani!
Before we end the show, let's hear a melodious song!
2 lines for us, please?
You sang really well.
Your son is a great musician
You're a great singer!
I want to go learn music too!
