My name is Carol Meldrum and I’m the training and development manager at Allied Vehicles.
The company are a normal garage operation where we have accident and
repairs centres, services, parts etc.
But the main thrust of our business comes from our
manufacturing and engineering department where we actually build vehicles on site.
Well I see the most of our staff are fairly proficient however
probably there is a great number in our manufacturing area where
it’s going to take time; we have to train people when they start with us
we have to go through various
stages of the build with them until they become proficient
therefore we are talking 2 or 3 years down the line before we have fully efficient people on the line
on the manufacturing line.
As training and development manager of the company obviously training is close to my heart
and there is a lot of training that goes on at allied; both external and internal training
Over the last 12 months I would say we’ve done a fair bit of external training
with companies that are specific to the automotive industry.
We have plenty IT training going on both internal and external
and we have training through the local colleges as well.
We do SVQ’s, NVQ’s,
we do modern apprenticeships, we actually do a lot of training in the company
Over the last 2 years or so, maybe even 3 years now, we’ve been working very closely with companies
that do the get ready for work scheme.
And this has proved very very beneficial to us, bringing young people into the company
and we have I think probably around 15 or 16 young people who have gone through this particular programme with us
who are now employed; were brought in as placements on a trial period of, I cant remember now, maybe 12 weeks or so
and after that period have been offered a permanent position because they’ve proved themselves
and have gained their modern apprenticeship through this scheme as well.
I think it’s definitely a worthwhile way of bringing new people or young people into the company
and obviously giving them the opportunity to work as well.
