One of the ways that faculty can practice Mentoring on the Run
is through assignments, or in other words,
incorporating mentoring into teaching.
So I give a writing assignment on having the students identify
all their bad high school habits.
Second, I ask the students what they're going to do
in the course of this semester to overcome these habits.
And third and most importantly, I ask them for advice on how
they want me to work with them on overcoming these bad habits.
Usually the advice that they give me is very practical advice.
They usually tell me that they themselves will be
the ones responsible for overcoming these habits.
or in some cases, they would say that the only way
that they can learn is by me making an example of them
and calling them out in class.
So each person is different and this gives me
very valuable advice on how to work
with each individual student in the class.
Through one single assignment, we learn how, in different ways,
to help each individual student within our classroom.
But we also learn their commitment to also improve
as students themselves.
And by doing so, we become better mentors,
but our students also in the process become better students.
