Hi, my name is Jason Nelson and I am FEMA.
I'm the Chief of the Disaster Response
Branch within the Legislative Affairs
Division of External Affairs.
I'm responsible for congressional
notifications and interactions with all
members of Congress and their staff as
it relates to disaster activity.
I started with FEMA in 1991 as a summer
hire out of high school. I graduated
college and then became a disaster
assistance employee in the congressional
cadre. Following that, I became a CORE
employee, and after that, I ended up
becoming a permanent full time employee.
My own family experienced a disaster and
that was Hurricane Isabelle. We were
without power and water for about three
weeks, and I actually was also deployed
at FEMA headquarters as the lead
congressional liaison also supporting
Hurricane Isabelle operations.
I would strongly recommend to anyone
accepting a position within the Federal
Emergency Management Agency. I believe
FEMA is the agency that is committed to
doing their job, and their mission; and
if you're highly motivated, have talent,
have skills and ability, then I believe
that FEMA is a place you should apply.
I get to help someone each and every day.
Every time there's a disaster situation
that overwhelms state and local
governments and FEMA is called in to
support the states and local governments,
I feel a sense of pride that I'm able to
actually help my fellow Americans recover
from a disaster situation.
