The Glendale Civic Center is known for hosting thousands of conferences, trade
shows, weddings and other events.
Please welcome the Honorable Janice
K Brewer, Governor of the state of Arizona.
And now...this award-winning venue is also known for having high
end technology customized for people with hearing loss.
Well this is amazing. I mean you've absolutely shown that you're going to be
accessible to everybody. Thanks to a deaf and hard-of-hearing grant with partial funding from the
Arizona Community Foundation, the Glendale Civic Center has installed
what's called an
FM system. Basically, hidden wireless antennas in the ceiling,
transmit signals to small hand-held receivers
and the sound in the room goes directly into
hearing aids. It makes us feel that we can reach that audience
without them feeling isolated or not being able to participate
in the event. So you're totally accessible. The commission for the deaf
and hard-of-hearing
is very very happy that you've done this. On this day...
The speaker is working the room, we're having to take the microphone out.
several hearing aid users put the new technology to the test in the main ballroom
of the Civic Center. You guys can all hear right? Yeah. That's wonderful
Some of the people that were here to test the system talked about sounds actually
seemed like they were in their head.
Goes wirelessly to my hearing aid... so it actually sounds like you're sitting next
to me.
Your voice actually does sound like it's inside
the person's head and
which is what you want. To ensuring Arizona is at the top...
Whether it is someone talking from the podium. A derivative of sugar...
This new technology eliminates background noise
creating clear communication. Users
either wear a neck loop like a necklace, an ear hook,
or small set of headphones. I think you'll be surprised how many people
will take advantage... take advantage of the technology
and enjoy using it with these with the events you have here.
It's a great thing. Of course I'm very fond of the City of Glendale anyway. Laughs
Ah, I think it's a great idea to do this and uh...
and make this available and I hope you can get the word out to people
and I certainly would recommend it. You have a choice of headphones, you have a choice
This new technology is part of a growing trend to help more than 700,000
Arizonans who have hearing loss.
And FM systems like this one are being put in public places
around the world. What it does for me is it lessens my anxiety
and my frustration with communication because I know now
when I come to the Glendale Civic Center, I know that you got these devices,
so I don't have to worry about, am I'm I going to be able to hear, gee, I better get there
fifteen minutes early so I get a place in the front so I can watch the person's
lips.
I don't have that anxiety and frustration any longer. There is no charge
for Civic Center clients to use this new system,
and it's believed the Glendale Civic Center is the first conference center in
the state of Arizona
to install this technology. It's going to be a big help for the public and
I know everybody will be glad to be here. Oh, we're extremely proud. It just shows that
we're
continually trying to progress. For more information contact the Glendale Civic Center
