jbjb Hi, Amy Porterfield here with eMarketing Vids and this is another edition of Facebook
Friday. And today, we re talking contests. The big question is, on Facebook, do contests
really work? m in a group of different social media marketers on Facebook, it s a private
group and yesterday, there was a big discussion on Facebook Contests. And the people in my
group are really smart, they have really strategic minds and they had a lot of good things to
say about contests in general. So the question is, do contests really work? Is it worth your
time, money and resources? So I want to go over a few things that a lot of people think
about contests and then give you a few quick tips to make your contest really work on Facebook.
So the big question again, do contests really work? You see a lot of contests out there
for iPads and Mac computers and big prize giveaways that everybody would love. The tech
gadgets are really popular when people do a massive contest on Facebook. But a lot of
the times, those types of contests don t really work and what happens is those contests attract
uninterested fans that really don t engage with your page. Also, they can give you a
flood of leads but zero relevancy. The people you re attracting have no interest in your
programs or services. Also, what you get is a bunch of people who just want free stuff.
So they don t want to engage with you. They don t want to know more about your mission,
or your vision, or your business in general, they just want free stuff. That s what you
re usually attracting when you do the big-ticket tech kind of gadgets that really has nothing
to do with your programs, services, or your own business. Also, contests can bring down
your score if you re not careful. And the reason for this is when you get a bunch of
unengaged fans on your Facebook page, each fan has its own score. So on average, if you
add that up, you have a bunch of people that have a very little engagement with you, it
could bring down your overall score on your page. Also, that could be a huge waste of
time and money for basically all the reasons I mentioned above. So you want to be very
careful. ve also heard around town that contests that do the iPads or the MACs, they kind of
show some type of desperation or lack of creativity. Because everybody is doing them these days,
you see them everywhere online. There are even websites that you can go to that will
show you what companies are doing those big-ticket giveaways, so you can actually go to those
Facebook pages, enroll in the contest and hopes of winning. So again, those types of
websites that tell people where to go and find the free stuff are definitely not attracting
the right audience. So I have kind of a different take that I want to propose to you the next
time you do a giveaway or a contest on Facebook. Obviously, when you do a giveaway or a contest,
there are two major things you can be doing. You could be building your fan base quickly
and you can be attracting high quality fans. I want you to think of long-term engagement.
Down the road, what are you going to be selling them or promoting to them and are you attracting
the right audience, so that your promotions down the road are really going to stick. So
here are a few tips for you. One, I want you to attract invested interested fans by creating
prizes related to your own programs or services. So if I m a social media marketer, giving
away an iPad is not necessarily the smartest thing. But giving away free consultation,
or free coaching for Facebook marketing, or giving away my new book to people on my Facebook
page, those are things that I know my fans would be interested in because they come to
me for Facebook marketing. So that s just one example. Also, consider the likes and
interests of your target audience and create a campaign around them. So this means that
you really need to get symmetric, you need to dive in, use some tools that will tell
you what is your fan all about? Your ideal audience, that fan that you re attracting
has relevancy, they really care about your business, they are interested in what you
re selling or what else do they like, what are things that will pick their interest?
You need to really dig down and find out the demographics and the psychographics of your
fans in order to make sure that giveaway is relevant to them. And three, think about low
cost plus high emotional value prizes. So like I said, you don t need to give away this
big iPad or these MAC computers in order to attract a great audience. What can you do
related to your ideal audience that won t cost you a lot of money but definitely your
fans will see it as a high emotional value. They really think, Oh! I ve got to have that.
That s something that would really change the game for me. What s that thing that will
give that high emotional value? And four, targeted prizes and giveaways for targeted
fans, that s what I want you to think, targeted prizes and giveaways for targeted fans. So
again, you re just thinking about what does my audience want and what prize or giveaway
would be relevant to them? And number five, use targeted Facebook ads for greater exposure
to your ideal audience. This one is really important, when you do have a contest because
Facebook ads can be so laser focused, Facebook ads are a great thing to use to promote your
contest. So you can make sure that you re really attracting that target audience and
not just the audience that wants free stuff. So I definitely suggest to you, take your
contest to the next level by incorporating Facebook ads. I wanted to show you a great
example of a contest that s going on right now on Facebook that s highly targeted. I
mentioned earlier, I m in that private Facebook group with other social media marketers and
one of the women in the group works with Wildfire. And Wildfire is an application you can use
on Facebook as your foundation for your contest. It s a great way to make sure that your contest
looks good, follows the regulations and it has a lot of bells and whistles to make your
contest go even further and get greater exposure and attract the right audience. So I want
to show you this because this is for the website space.com and if you scroll down, notice what
giveaways they have. The first big grand prize is this telescope worth $300 and then if you
scroll down, they re giving away bomber jackets and T-shirts with their logos on it and other
different books that are related to space. So their prizes are highly targeted because
they know who their audience is. And this is a perfect example of a contest that s worth
your time and money and resources because you re ideally going to attract the right
audience. So I just wanted to show you this and also visually, it looks fantastic. So
that s another thing you want to keep in mind as you are putting together your contest.
You want to stick with the Facebook rules, you want to make it visually appealing to
people and you want to make sure you re attracting the right audience, so just a few different
tips there to get you moving in the right direction next time you do a contest. So I
ll put the URL to this Facebook page underneath the video here so you can go check it out
for yourself. So there you have it. Hopefully, you ve found these tips useful and if you
liked it, then make sure you click the like button and tell others about it. So this is
