Module 4: Live with Leslie and Mary
Welcome to Module 4 and Building Community. Let's hover over the overview. In this module
we will examine the techniques for building community in the online environment.
You will also develop your own Discussion prompt and reflect on your use of social media
tools.
Our textbook for this module includes in-depth information on community in the online environment.
Topics include the definition of community, strategies for community building and techniques
that encourage interaction between students and teachers.
Be sure to carefully read the information on pages 5 and 6 as the information found
here will support the work you will do for assignment 4.2.
You will see that there is a section on social media found on
page 9. The information here will help you prepare for your reflection in assignment
4.3.
But let’s fly back to Module 4 and explore a bit more.
Assignment 4.1 is our Discussion for this week. After reading the textbook, post your
thoughts on techniques that you feel will be successful in community building in your
classrooms. Notice we’ve added some spice – agree and disagree responses to your classmates.
This is a way to engage you in the discussion.
Assignment 4.2 is the portfolio assignment for this week. Now it’s your turn to create
your own Discussion prompt, specific to the classes you teach. You will develop and implement
a discussion prompt that supports student internalization of academic content. You will
post your prompt in the view site/wiki site associated with this assignment, and get feedback
from our class. Do take a look at the example for our 4.2 assignment, found by clicking
the link on the left navigation bar.
Your reflection for this week looks at your own use of social networking.
You will write your reflection in your view projects/wiki site associated with the link
at the bottom of the assignment. Mary and I especially like the second bullet that asks
you to think about how your students may respond differently to social networks as compared
to how you might respond.
