Hello PanTV friend. I'm Sandro Miranda. Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu is a mother of five.
She lives at Toronto-Danforth region since 2002. She is the Green Party candidate for MP.
Adriana spoke with us about family, youth, and her challenge: win the election at her riding.
SM: II'm with Adriana Mugnatto, she is the Green Party candidate for Toronto-Danforth riding.
I would like you to talk about yourself, Adriana.
I'm Brazilian-Canadian, I was born in Rio. I have relatives in Brazil, I lived most of life in Canada.
My mother was a refugee, she left Ukraine and met my father in Brazil. I grew up in Canada.
I arrived here when I was 4 years old, I studied Anthropology at U of T.
Then I spent most of my life taking care of my family, I have two adopted kids from Brazil.
I also have another adopted child from South Korea, and two biological children.
SM: At your riding you have a 'heavy weight' candidate. You're a local politician...
…for the last five years. What do you believe will bring you votes?
I believe that I will get votes because I've been participating and I fighting for my community.
And because I also meet face-to-face with residents, talking to them.
I understand what they need and the challenges they have.
SM: Realistically. This election developed in the last minute, suddenly election day fell from the sky.
That's because there is no agreement about the budget, then we have an election in Canada.
SM: You had five weeks to prepare yourself for this election. I imagine you knew about this election...
Was about to happen, that the proposed budget would be challenged by the political parties.
SM: How do you see the short time notice to prepare yourself for these elections?
SM: Do you believe you get a lot of votes or are your surprised by the feedback you are getting...
From your possible electors?
I believe I have a lot of support from the residents in my riding for the Green Party.
But we know it is a soft support. Electors are afraid of new governments.
They don't believe in any of the other parties, but they also are afraid of having a bad experience.
What is going to happen? I don't know, I know that the support for the Greens here is growing.
What is going to happen then? I don't know.
But it is an immense challenge, because one party holds the seat from this riding...
That's why is so difficult to someone representing a smaller party to win here...
But I do what we can do.
SM: The youth don't want to vote, less than 50% of them did vote last federal election.
They don't want to vote? Do you have a plan to atract the youth? I believe the youth like the Greens...
The youth always voted less than the adults, lately is getting worse.
Now the youth is discouraged to vote by the government because on the eyes of the government...
The youth is not interested on the major political party priorities...
We have some problems where Elections Canada tried to reach young voters..
But the Elections Canada efforts were defeated, there is no real intention to make them vote.
The Greens are trying to fight agains the status quo, I've created a video called 'Green line'...
Having the young voter following the Green Line to their ballot.
it's really important for me getting the youth interested in politics, having them voting...
Even if they don't vote for the greens, it's important ho have interest in politics...
Otherwise we will end it up with a non-representative government...
Which wont represent its population and is not interested in its population.
Eventually it will only create more problems.
SM: Message?
Vote for the future. Vote for the children. Vote Green.
SM: Thank you
