It takes the train about five minutes to reach the Highland Park Station. It will cross eight
intersections before it gets there. The first street the train crosses is Avenue 50. This
is the only street crossing along this section that has quad gates to keep cars out of the
intersection when the train is passing by. Avenues 51 through 57 use street signals to
keep cars safe when the train travels down Marmion Way. Through these streets, the train
is doing what we call street running, which means it operates the same as a car, stopping
for the red lights.
There are active warning signs with the flashing train sign that lights up when the train is
approaching. It is very important to pay attention to these signs. In this section, the train
is traveling at 20 miles per hour. As the train is passing through these intersections,
all drivers will get a red signal to stop. Cars must obey all traffic signals on Marmion
Way, and do not run red lights. Besides being illegal, running a red light here could cause
you to have a serious collision with your train.
We also need cars to be careful that they do not drift onto the tracks as they drive
down Marmion Way. People backing their cars out of driveways need to make sure they don’t
back onto the tracks. It is also important that pedestrians only cross Marmion Way when
they get a walk signal, and children need to be careful around Marmion Way and not play
near the tracks. They also need to be careful riding their bikes and skateboards around
railroad tracks.
