Hello, this is Linda from Trad Online, and today I'm going to talk to you about an OSS
tool - that's Open Source Software tool, and I'm a big fan of those - erm, specifically
for translating, it's called Google Translator Toolkit. And surprisingly, not lots of people
know about this one. So, this is one of the reasons why I chose it.
Well, basically everyone online these days has a Google account, so if you have translating
needs that go further than your basic Google Translate, you might want to try GTT. It's
definitely not your traditional CAT [computer-assisted translation] tool, and the big pro is having
your docs with you on the move; and lots of people are on the move these days, including
translators. So, there you go, another pro.
Now this is an online app that uses the powerful features of Google Translate, but it's aimed
at translators so, it has more features, like uploading the source file, using Translation
Memories and Glossaries, and of course sharing with collaborators- maybe you have other translators
working with you on larger projects. I wouldn't use it for localisation projects, although
it does support .po files and .html files.

While you can't copy-paste text, as in Google Translate, you can upload a variety of files,
so let's see what kind of files we can use. So you have you basic Microsoft Word, Open
documents, plain text, rich text, also if you deal with subtitles it's useful to know
that the Translator Toolkit accepts those files. Again for localisation you have .po
and .html, .strings… So really really useful, you can just, um, mention here the URL of
the webpage that needs translating and it will upload it automatically. You can translate
Wikipedia articles, and last but definitely not least, you can translate YouTube videos.
So let's see a file and see the magic of Google Translator Toolkit.
[pause]
So you have two panels, and on the left you have the source file, which is in English
here for me, and here is your target file that's been pre-translated, using a computer
translation - in Romanian. Good thing to know is that it's been pre-segmented, and the orange
indicates that this translation has already been edited. The red means that it hasn't
been touched, and the purple will show you that there are placeholders missing. So let's
see, I think this one does… Yes, it does. So what you do is insert the missing placeholders.
Right so now it's been - it shows you that it's been edited. It's orange. Now this is
not something essential; it's just useful in case you're the kind of person that will
delete this because it doesn't look nice :) but it's actually an html tag. So if you need,
if you definitely need it in your translation, you need to keep it. I don't need it, so I'm
just gonna delete it. This is how you move back and forth between segments. You are either
click the arrows or you use the shortcut keys, Ctrl+K - Ctrl-J…
[pause]
Here's another part of the Toolkit, so if you click here… sometimes you have one,
two, maybe even three suggestions from your friendly computer translation, and you can
pick the one that you want, by clicking "Use Suggestion", and you can also look up words
[typing]
…and see if you want to use those- some people, if they've used them, they might have
rated them. So that again, is pretty useful.
[pause]
Every time you make a change it's automatically saved. And when you complete the document
you just click "Complete"… and.. here you go, here you can invite collaborators, like
in Google Docs, to translate with you, and when you're done you can also open it as a
Google Doc and share it that way with your client, or just download it.
[pause]
As I mentioned, you can split and merge segments. And that's basically it: pretty easy. Again
you can add Translation Memories here, and Glossaries. So I think I have a small glossary
to show you. You can't edit it within your browser, but you can always upload .csv files
for new entries, and you can search the entries. So - the English, the part of speech, and
Romanian.
All in all, pretty useful. So I suggest you try and use this
and recommend it to other people.
