Prosecutors raided the offices of the National Intelligence Service late Monday as part of
their probe into allegations the spy agency fabricated evidence in an espionage case.
The case, which began last year, revolves around a former Seoul Metropolitan Government
official accused of spying for North Korea. According to the prosecution, the Chinese
government documents secured by the NIS, which showed the official had traveled to North
Korea, were said to have been faked. At a meeting with her senior presidential
staff Monday, President Park said the prosecutors' investigation should leave no suspicions and
the spy agency must fully cooperate with the investigation.
Opposition leaders say the prosecutors' probe cannot be trusted as they have a history of
collaborating with the NIS. They are calling for a special counsel investigation
into the case. Reform of the state spy agency has been a
hot political issue,... even since it was swept up in allegations it meddled in the
2012 presidential election.
