There are but a few Maori real estate agents.
This is what Max Oliver, the chairman of the Real Estate
Industry Training Organisation, told Te Karere today.
So there could be benefits
in a new real estate training programme for secondary schools.
Maiki Sherman has this report.
This is the main goal for real estate agents like Makuini Bluett.
This Ngati Awa and Te Whanau a Apanui descendant
has worked in this industry for 20 years,
but you'll be hard pressed to find many other Maori.
Because of this, a call has come from Max Oliver,
the Chairman of the Real Estate Industry Training Organisation.
He says by the year 2020
the Maori and Pacific Island population will rise to 20%
and so the number of Maori real estate agents
should follow the same pattern.
A programme is currently being drafted
by the Real Estate Industry Training Organisation
for secondary schools.
The aim is to teach students the intricacies of the industry
in the hope of boosting numbers.
According to our research,
there are 15,000 real estate agents throughout the country.
However, less than one percent of those are Maori.
The aim is to have the gateway programme launched within schools
by next year. Maiki Sherman, Te Karere.
