In 2003 I came into possession of these moon rocks for the purpose of showing them around
to the citizens of North Carolina. Here in 2010 we’re going to turn these over to the
North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences so they can display these appropriately for
many more North Carolina citizens to enjoy. We have already reserved space in the Space
Observation Exhibit to display the moon rocks. So we’re just thrilled.
If I remember correctly, Harrison Schmitt was the only geologist to set foot on the
moon. So these were collected by the only geologist who ever set foot up there.
Well, it’s my honor on behalf of the citizens of North Carolina to turn over to the North
Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences these artifacts from the nation’s space program;
the Apollo 17 mission, this moon rock from the Taurus-Littrow region, and this signed
plaque by the three Apollo 17 astronauts.
