[Intro music] Hello, Iím Riki Gerardy. When buying a violin
it can be confusing knowing how to choose one from the many instruments available. Today,
I have 4 guidelines for you. [Music]
The first thing to know is that only a few violins have a really good tone. You may experience
this in many different price ranges, so donít think that a violin is good because it is
expensive. [Music]
This is particularly true of modern violins. To get the best value, look for a good sounding
instrument by a young maker who is not yet well known.
[Music] If you are considering an old violin, be sure
that it is authentic. Donít be fooled by a label inside a violin. Old violins are really
a good investment, but only when they are genuine.
Consider also the condition. Modern fine restoration is virtually invisible. So look very carefully.
[Music] Try several violins in order to decide how
bright a tone you are looking for. Many players like a very strong sound; others prefer a
sweeter, more veiled tone. If you like a violin, check that its sound is even and clear across
all strings. Listen for any wolf tones: these are harder
to correct than on a cello. Compare it in a hall with other violins and listen from
a distance. Try it also with different bows.
