He didn’t have a lot of friends at home. He was really nice and outgoing but he came
from a very small town. He came to college with his best friend and they were roommates.
Just usual roommate stuff, things just didn’t work out. They weren’t really friends, he
had to move out of the room, things just really went sour and south quickly. He moved out
of the room and after that, things were fine, he was happy. He made tons of new friends,
he really liked it here but when he went home, he didn’t have that best friend or that
group of friends anymore. They were all gone so he was just by himself and started drinking
a lot, spending a lot of time by himself, drinking by himself... stuff like that. He
started experimenting with drugs and I had been talking to him online up to a week before
he had killed himself and he had said that he had been really depressed and hated being
home but he was looking forward to coming back because he was signing a lease for an
apartment. He wanted to move off campus at this point because he had found a group of
friends and he was probably going to go Greek. He was deciding between two fraternities on
campus, maybe three fraternities. He has a really good group of friends, really good
guys. He has a girlfriend here who adored him. He had broken up with his girlfriend
from home, so being home over winter break was really really tough.
He was pretty normal around his parents but then at night after they went to bed he would
drink all night by himself. And one morning he had taken LSD and he had shot himself
— around the morning time — and his parents obviously heard the shot. He was an outdoorsman
and a hunter and he had a little gun you would take to the gun range. People thought maybe
he got the gun to kill himself. I told them that he had had this gun for two
or three years; this is something that he has always had. People thought that he had
wanted to commit suicide but I think it was more the drugs and his emotional state making
him want to, than him really actually wanting to do it. It was really tough for everyone
because we kept being told that it was a suicide and that he wanted to do this and having talked
to him up to a week before it happened, I know it wasn’t... because he wanted to come
back and see everyone but he had no one home. That’s another huge problem that at school
you may have a huge support base. Even when you were at high school you had counselors
and you had friends, but when you go home it all crumbles because you’re not there
anymore. You don’t have that. Except your family and his family wasn’t even aware
that there was such a problem.
