Hansel and Gretel is a
beginning work for a lot of students, who are hesitant about opera
and presents it in an open and easy way.
We don't do these huge, grand operas.
We have these one act performances always in the fall to
kick off our Christmas season. What's great is you're taking this very classic
fairy tale and setting it to music that is
not only classical, but also there are folk music elements. We are going to cater to
this production to the students here at Augustana.
So, I'm focusing on
what their needs are to grow as artists, and also
what they are willing to express as young artists,
and also what I think would work for the community at Augustana.
It's very laid back but also very
deep in a way, if you let it, there's a lot on very subtle things about
characters and scenes,
and it makes you think it's very open to interpretation,
but it also has a very clear point. I think it'll be something enjoyable
regardless of if you are familiar with opera or not.
Everyone is familiar with the story of Hansel and Gretel,
and I think that it's going to be and exciting
continuation of what they're doing at the Opera Department here in Augustana.
