Hello welcomed to today's video on disabling the warning message when you change a file
extension
for example I have this image on my desktop and it is dot jpeg
say i've named it accidentally
in preview and I need to change it to a png file
finder will come and say if I want to change it from jpeg to png
now that error is an extra click most the time you know when want to change something
because you've typed it in
very rarely do you actually change a file extension
we can disable this warning with a simple terminal command
to change a preference we are going to use a terminal command
so we are going to open up terminal in applications
utilities
terminal.app
we will write a command that will change a preference within Finder
defaults writes, this is a command to say please change my preference
com dot apple dot finder this is the finder preferences file
then we are going to write FX
enable
extension change
warning, very descriptive
they've got to get the capitalisation correct
i've put the command in the comments so you can copy and paste it into your terminal
boolean which is a
yes or no command, then we are going to write false
then hit enter
ok we have change the file, but Finder doesn't know its changed
we got to reload Finder so it read the preference file
we write killall Finder
and that will restart Finder
changes be made so if we get back to our image file and change it from jpeg
to png
there is no warning, so we can change file extensions as we want
now if you want to have
the warning back all we've got to do is change the preference
if you have watched some of my previous videos the quickest way to do this
is to press the up arrow twice in terminal
and then change false to true
press enter
killall Finder
enter again
Finder will restart
now when you go and change the extension
lets change it to jpg again
the warning reappears and we get the warning to use either png or jpg
lets us png this time
its not that difficult just a simple command change
i'd like to disable this command because it gets in the way
a bit annoying
i know when I am changing a file because I have just pressed the enter button
there are many of these types of tricks you can do on your Mac
