We are hated.
Like they don't like us as an interpreter working for the foreign forces.
The Afghans must be allowed to build their democracy around their own culture. You can't force anything on them.
If she prays five times. If she's beautiful or not it really doesn't matter.
They told my father they want to kidnap your son and ...
I can just breathe and be alive.
Children were killed wearing their formal wear.
Doesn't the attacker have children? A wife or family?
-Fifteen of my relatives ... -Who was behind it?
Taliban. This is the work of the enemy. Al-Qaida is behind it.
They were aided by the government! Otherwise this could never have happened!
They are enabling this. It's wrong to make peace with Taliban.
Today is Eid! People had put on their formal wear.
At home are their wives and daughters waiting to congratulate them with Eid.
What wrong did they do?! They were Muslims coming to God's house.
That was their only mistake.
When we went out there was a sudden explosion. We were knocked to the ground.
There was a lot of smoke. Then we saw more dead people than living.
-Who was among the dead? -They were all our brothers.
-Were they police or civilians? -Police and civilians.
It was carried out by Taliban in complete contradiction to Islam.
A Muslim does not do this.
We ask president Karzai to ensure -
- the security services arrests someone.
We have no government in reality.
I hold president Karzai personally responsible for this.
When planned suicide bombers are arrested they are released on bail just a few days later.
What is this? What kind of government do we have?
When I got there I saw dead bodies.
I saw children losing their life on the road. I saw blood.
There was a river just across from the road.
And the water and blood had been mixed.
It was like a river of blood that was crossing the road.
The insurgents told us "We carry out our attacks where we can see foreigners".
But on that day there was no single foreigner at that Mosque.
There was all Muslims. There all children. Old and young people.
So they proved that they will never negotiate with Afghan government.
They will never compromise with Afghan government.
And they will continue their assassination. They will continue their suicide attacks.
Especially in Faryab province.
At least 45 people were killed and 60 injured in the suicide attack.
It was the deadliest attack in Afghanistan in 2012.
Two days later president Hamid Karzai arrives to meet survivors and next of kin.
This is a brave girl who will grow up with her brothers.
Through education and development of Afghanistan she will have her revenge.
Through the progress of this country she will have her revenge.
-Mister president, I have something to say. -Let me continue.
No wait, go talk there.
Just talk.
Six in my family were killed and two children are injured.
A brother and sister.
I'm the oldest at home.
Go ahead boy.
What shall I do? Should I get food or go to school?
Both, God willing.
It's the authorities task to get you food.
Your task is to go to school.
Be certain of that.
You're our president and you swore an oath to the population of Afghanistan.
And you said you would do something for us.
Why then when the enemy is arrested here, are they released when they reach Kabul?
They come back to Faryab and carry out suicide attacks.
You must act from the position you have as our president.
You must do something for our poor innocent people.
They don't have enough food. You must do something about it.
I don't want to mix in politics or the rebuilding of the country here.
I have talked to the province leader.
He explained the needs in this area well.
I will take it with me back to Kabul. And we will pray on it.
People are very tired of those sitting in the current government.
Abdul Rauf Muhammed Chief for the Afghan Health Department during the Taliban rule.
They steal and rob. They have even taken married women and people’s houses.
All the nice houses in Kabul belong to mighty warriors or commanders.
People suffer when they see that. They don't want people like that.
The man who just talked to the president was a respected Mullah in Maimana.
He is killed five days later.
When we were leaving after prayer, two terrorists were waiting on a motorbike.
A motorcycle with two people came and stopped here.
They fired many shots -
- and drove away before we could get here.
One man threw a rock on the man with the gun -
- he was shot in the leg.
It's been one hour since he was killed.
But no representatives from the government has come here.
The insecurity here is caused by the governments failure to act. Everyone knows this.
The authorities have lists with names of six terrorists in this town. They know all about them.
If it keeps like this there will only be one solution:
Everyone who lives in Maimana must move towards Mazar.
So the mafia groups who have declared holy war can remain here.
Death!
Death to the enemies of Islam!
Bismulla Haqyar's funeral.
Maimana is a very small city.
In this small city 11 people has been assassinated.
The insurgents if they want they can kill they can *** anyone in this town.
So no one is gonna stop that.
Behrouz and Sidiq have worked as interpreters for the Norwegian forces in Faryab.
They have both received threats.
It states that: Behrouz you are far from Islam, -
- because you are working with the infidels so you are also an infidel.
Then they say:
We request you to provide us with one Russian AK-47 and one PKM.
If you don't have these weapons then you have to pay the equivelant of the money to us.
If you don't pay that then there is no doubt we will reach you and your family.
And at the end it says -
- because you are cooperating with the christians and the jewish, -
- that's why we are certain about this letter. Anything we have mentioned we will carry on that.
Then I actually translated this letter and gave it to the PRT.
They didn't do anything of that.
Norway has a moral duty to help them and bring them to Norway.
Walid Al-Kubaisi Norwegian-Iraqi Author and Islam Critic
They must experience safety because they have helped the Norwegian mission in Afghanistan.
I think it's a duty, a moral duty that they are brought to Norway.
They are the ones that really deserve asylum in Norway.
Because they are going to be killed. Today? Tomorrow?
When the troops pull out all these 'traitors' will be killed.
We have worked 8 years with them
People don't like Norwegian soldiers as well as they don't like us.
They don't differentiate.
Even they put some more blames, like prostitution and spying for the foreign troops.
As I said the only hope for us is this asylum process.
Hopefully there will be a positive answer as soon as possible.
Before we lose our life or one of us lose our life in this town.
Behrouz and Sidiq is among 106 former employed Afghans who have requested asylum in Norway.
We have a responsibility to make a very thorough assessment of their asylum requests, -
- because it can't just be an automated process where just because you have worked for Norwegian forces -
- you get asylum.
Anne-Grethe Strøm-Erichsen Norwegian Defence Minister
That you're considered a traitor just because you helped Norwegian forces, -
- that's not my impression. There's no automation there.
And we have to remember the most important thing we can contribute with in Afghanistan -
- is that they can build a society, a democratic society, -
- and then we can't take out everyone who could be of value to the Afghan society.
With help from his father Jawid has moved to India.
I came to India because of the situation in Afghanistan.
And after the attack in Eid I was very much stressful.
I was very sad about the people that died in the attack.
That's why I felt that I need to be in a peaceful situation to plan for the next four years of my life.
I would like to be a doctor.
Because I know when you suffer from a pain how it feels.
Pain is pain. There is not any differentiation for pain.
It's now forbidden to drive motorcycles into Maimana city.
The purpose is to prevent more attacks.
The check point controls are also tightened.
You have to stay here. You are forced to stay here.
If you have position like the ministers, the mayors, like the parliament members.
They will not live in Afghanistan. They will not live...
Whenever they feel the situation is getting worse their families are not living here right now.
All of them are in Dubai, United States. They have their homes there.
You know they are working for their own pockets, -
- not for the people of Afghanistan. If they had worked -
- they would work in the last 10 years. We would have had different changes.
Billions of dollars have come from different countries. What happened with them?
If the money had been spent the right way, -
- Afghanistan could have been one of the world’s most developed countries.
The old warlords have come to power -
- by changing their clothes and cutting their beard.
They have all the power. Karzai can say what he wants, but he can't get anything done.
If I'm not mistaken the Northern Alliance has 80% of the power in the departments.
You could say the real power in Afghanistan lies in the hands of criminals.
The big thing happening is that most people don't trust the government now.
The government is like a bridge, but the bridge has been broken from both sides -
- because people have seen the suicide attack on that day and now they don't trust the government.
There is no security when there is no respect to humans, -
- when there is no good government. When there is no good job.
So of course you are nervous.
From being a peaceful province in Afghanistan, Faryab has become one of the most violence struck areas.
On national basis increasing unrest is expected because of the 2014 elections when president Karzai steps down.
Today all the worlds doors are open for Afghanistan.
The dollar drips on some but most people are starving.
Certain groups have taken over the state and have everything.
Therefore I feel when the NATO forces pull out of the country -
- it's both important and necessary that the Taliban comes back.
Most feel that the Taliban is better than the current rulers.
We have started to negotiate with the Taliban.
Manizha Bakhtari Afghanistan’s ambassador to Norway
If Taliban, including their leadership -
- accepts Afghanistan's constitution. If they come and put down their arms, -
- and if they are not member of Al-Qaida group.
And if they won the election so then in this case it's democracy in the country. Then why not.
We've entered a situation where the fiber optics are more important than the politics.
Kai Eide, UN special envoy to Afghanistan 2008-2010
At least 25-30% of the population has access to internet.
That's a massive development.
And there's been major leaps when it comes to women’s rights, school ...
I believe the modernization impulses are irreversible.
People believe if there's a democracy that people will choose freedom, -
- human rights, women’s rights, gender equality ...
But this collides with experiences from the Muslim world.
Now in Egypt.
78% of people voted on a constitution -
- which robs the people of the power and supports Islamic despotism.
So what will happen in Afghanistan?
I'm certain that ...
Taliban will become the strongest part.
My father is a teacher.
He's a really good guy.
When there's a problem with him he doesn't expose it to the family.
He keeps smiling even if he doesn't have any money.
He's almost 52 years old and he's like my friend.
You can't predict everything in life.
You don't know where or when you are safe, there are no guarantees.
No matter where you go you don't know if you are safe.
But you need someone to share secrets with.
One to feel safe with.
Then you have someone capable of giving you advice, so you get a feeling of safety.
We hope you get into the university, -
- to become an engineer. Then you will get a job and we will both earn decent wages.
Then the days will become easier, and we will have a better life.
You must look out for your brothers.
They must not be out at night and hang with bad people or drug addicts.
You're a big brother and you must give your brothers advice.
If you can't keep them from falling over then talk to me.
These are uncertain times. People are worried because there are so many with evil intentions.
If you hang with criminals you will become like them.
And if you become a bad person you have lost.
You must beat the problems before they happen.
And everything will be alright.
Most importantly we have stopped Afghanistan from being a nesting place for international terror as it used to.
Kjell Magne Bondevik, Norwegian Prime Minister 2001-2005 Sent the first soldiers to Afghanistan.
This was a war on terror, not Afghanistan or the Afghan people.
We have worked military but also humanitarian.
And in the civil society a number of tasks.
And even though not everything went as hoped, -
- you have to ask the counter question, how would the situation have looked had we not done this?
I must say I can’t see any alternatives.
We must also hold on what went well, why we were there, what the Norwegian forces have done and contributed to.
What daily life they have had for many years, -
- and an experience 7000-8000 Norwegian soldiers have received.
It's not like the international society after Afghanistan ...
Are using less military force, quite the opposite we see military force -
- used in a multitude of ongoing international conflicts.
And what we experience now is that many of those who have participated -
- in these operations ask what the effects of these engagements were.
It means we must learn.
We must dare to ask the questions. We must take wisdom from what we have done.
I think we all fell short. If we are being realistic.
That doesn't mean there weren't many who were doing a good job.
But we could have done better.
Especially if we had had a better ability to understand where we were, -
- understand the people, understand the traditions, -
- and place what we wanted to do into that context.
There was no lack of money, no lack of soldiers.
But lack of understanding, lack of respect, humility.
If we could have combined this.
Then we would have come much further than where we are today.
If war had any result. We would be the most promoted country in the world now.
Let's put the guns down and compromise with the government and let's start something new.
When there is peace, there is everything. Without peace, there is nothing.
It's still not known if the interpreters Behrouz or Sidiq are among the 21 Afghans who were offered asylum in Norway.
