Hello dear viewer
Nice of you to stop by and get to know our project: Jonatan Academy
The Jonatan Academy is our version of the flipped classroom.
This is the idea to let children watch certain subjects at home and help them practice in the classroom.
We’re not there yet at our school, especially because we work with children with special needs.
But we wanted to try out working with instructional movies.
These movies can show parents how the teacher explains certain subjects in the class.
But Jonatan Academy is especially is about activating the pupils.
We let them search for the best explanation of a certain math or language subject and then they actually make the movie themselves.
In Microsoft PowerPoint they create those schematics.
I write a plus sign and start at the top.
5 + 9 = 14 I write a 4 and remember the one.
The nice thing about Jonatan Academy is that we can reach a lot of people.
The children create the movies, but I, as a ICT-coördinator can work with Annick, who is the teacher.
This project give us a chance to collaborate witch enriches the activity.
We believe the process for creating a movie is as important as the result.
We want to make sure they actually use it in different ways and know what the goals of this exercise are.
It’s a different way of practicing, because they have to unravel all the different steps in the solution.
Looking at the end result, you could think this is “just” an ICT-activity.
But the Jonatan Academy is much more then that!
It’s a mix of language and math subjects.
Because they have to relate to the viewer, that does not know every step they have to explain every step in the process.
They go much more in depth to the subjects, and know it better than doing long lines of exercises on a sheet of paper.
They are learning about new media as well: writing a scenario, speaking to the viewer, the production process of a video and publishing it.
They learn about new media by creating it.
They always work in teams
The choose the subject together
How they will explain the subject
And help each other to digitize it with.
We also have big dreams with this project.
We’re working with the teacher-training.
Teacher-Trainees will help our pupils to create their movies.
And even international we want to reach out to other teachers.
The “how-to” video is subtitled in English
And on the BETT-show in London the project was shown on a teachmeet takeover.
You can hear how enthusiastic we are about this project,
because this relatively simple technology can have a big impact.
They learn a lot about the subjects and get to know technology during the process.
And with our library of movies that slowly grows, the kids at our school can take their teacher home.
