DALLAS: You guys ready for this?
Oww!
NARRATOR: Deep in the Alaskan wilderness...
JARED: Bear!
NARRATOR: One of the toughest competitions in the world
I'm loosing it...
is underway.
Four teams of rugged outdoorsmen.
Surviving off the land...
SEAN: I think you got him.
NARRATOR: With just the gear in their packs.
Each leg only sixty hours to make it from start to finish...
DALLAS: Holy cow.
NARRATOR: Or they're sent home.
Eleven legs, four teams, one winner.
On this episode.
EDDIE: Almost there! (Bleep) MALE: Let's go!
NARRATOR: With only three legs left...
JARED: Grady, be careful!
NARRATOR: Teams are locked and loaded.
TYLER: Marty!
GRADY: Dude, bear.
NARRATOR: As they battle through the heart...
THOMAS: Let's do it!
NARRATOR: Of bear country. EDDIE: Sean, get out of there!
SEAN: Oh my God.
NARRATOR: Leg nine...
The three remaining teams head out on Afognak Island.
MARTY: Hey, hold on, hold on, hang on.
This is, uh, the one time we need the guns loaded.
And, uh, this is serious, serious brown bear country. So..
EDDIE: Yeah, Afognak, biggest bears in the world, man.
MARTY: Hey, man, so I'm loading the .44 Magnum
as soon as we split up.
EDDIE: The Kodiak Brown Bear. It's legendary.
Think about an SUV with fur and giant teeth.
NARRATOR: Afognak Island is ruled by the Kodiak bear,
one of the largest bears on Earth.
And with summer salmon spawn in full swing,
Afognak's high population of bears is swarming
the rivers ready to feast.
EDDIE: Got your guns?
DALLAS: Watch out for bears!
NARRATOR: Along with the bear danger, the Endurance athletes,
Dallas, Sean, and Eddie, face another serious problem.
With three legs left in the competition,
the team's only notched one victory.
DALLAS: We're not in a position that we can lose another leg of
this expedition and still be in the running for the overall win.
We've got to start winning here.
Yo, Sean, you got that map? SEAN: Yo, yeah, man.
NARRATOR: From here...
The teams will cross 31 miles of treacherous,
bear-packed wilderness to reach the extraction landing zone
at the northern most tip of the island.
SEAN: Ok, fellas, uh, we're here, got dropped off
right here, Waterfall Bay.
We got to make it to the farthest northern point.
NARRATOR: In a must-win situation...
The Endurance team plans to take the most direct route across
the island, plunging straight through dense forest teeming
with ferocious bears.
SEAN: Going point A to point B, that's what we do, huh?
EDDIE: Yeah.
DALLAS: As much as it pains me to say it is we haven't won jack
[BLEEP]. We don't win this one, we're out of this race.
We got to take this one.
EDDIE: It's do or die right now.
I don't see a whole lot of underbrush,
so I think we follow the game trails.
And we can run the whole time.
DALLAS: Let's do it. [OVERLAPPING]
EDDIE: We gotta haul ***.
NARRATOR: Meanwhile...
MARTY: We're heading this way.
NARRATOR: The Mountaineers, Marty, Tyler,
and Thomas are coming off a win and are now tied for the lead.
MARTY: Let's just cut to the chase,
our team is a force to be reckoned with.
But what I can see from here, it's gonna be difficult
for all the teams.
This is the ruggedest Country on planet earth
THOMAS: We're starting to get into the thick forest, man.
We should orient ourselves a little bit.
Figure out where we're going, what we're doing.
TYLER: Let's check it out.
NARRATOR: The team has their sights set on the island's rich
salmon stock, the Afognak salmon run is now in full force.
Thousands of silver salmon swim upstream from the ocean
to lay their eggs.
TYLER: Look at that creek coming out.
I mean there's got to be some salmon right up and down.
THOMAS: Yeah, so is that the plan?
We're gonna go and catch fish and try to, uh,
stock up or what?
TYLER: Yeah, on that note, it's bear country, man,
all along this river. [OVERLAPPING]
MARTY: Dude, what am I doing? I'm loading.
TYLER: I know.
THOMAS: Yeah, let me, uh, load up my 12 gauge.
All right, I'm gonna put three slugs in.
All right, boys, we ready for bear?
NARRATOR: Only a few hundred yards into the forest,
the team already sees signs they're not alone.
MARTY: Watch your step, watch your step.
TYLER: Heavy, heavy bear traffic.
Hard to, hard to see more than a hundred feet, thick dense stuff.
When traveling on bear trails the concern is you need
a line of sight.
You could be walking along, and you could be ten feet away
from a bear, not see it.
And that's where bears attack.
[ANIMAL CALL]
What the hell is that?
Shh, brown bear, brown bear, right there.
Brown bear right there. Right there.
MARTY: We almost walked right up on him.
TYLER: That's a juvie.
THOMAS: Wow, look at that, man.
MARTY: Shh, let's just back up.
It's a two year old.
Two year old bear is a big-sized bear.
You know I could see his claws.
It seemed like they were that long as he laid them over
the edge of the log.
You don't know if his mother's nearby.
But a two-year-old bear by himself is also unpredictable.
THOMAS: He's checking us out.
For sure, he's looking for a scent.
TYLER: Isn't scared?
THOMAS: You don't want to stare these juvie bears in the eye
there, Marty.
They perceive it as a threat, man.
TYLER: That's right in our path. [OVERLAPPING]
Let's go this way around the lake.
MARTY: Let's take that ridge.
TYLER: Right behind him? THOMAS: I don't know, dude.
He's, uh, staring us down pretty hard.
TYLER: He's not moving.
THOMAS: And they could stalk us all the way through, man.
TYLER: Yeah.
THOMAS: They're silent, dude.
We didn't hear a single thing.
All we saw was movement.
MARTY: Let's head over that ridge.
TYLER: Yeah, we're in this puddle/lake right here, guys.
We can just go around, follow this ridge.
There's a more prominent ridgeline if we go that way.
MARTY: I'm telling you right now whether we go left or right,
we're gonna-- we're gonna run into more bears.
NARRATOR: Along the shore...
JARED: Let's go hit the trail.
NARRATOR: The Military team, Jared and Grady,
are tied with the Mountaineers for the lead in the competition.
But with the loss of their teammate Rudy Reyes on leg
seven, two men must now do the work of three.
JARED: Since Rudy got injured, the team dynamic is certainly
not the same without him.
Even though Grady and I are in great standing amongst
the competition, now Grady and I have to carry gear common
to all that used to spread out to three people.
NARRATOR: To get a win, they plan to push harder than ever.
But after weeks of living off nothing but beans and rice,
they need more protein.
GRADY: Jared and I already have three wins under our belt,
we can afford to spend a little bit more time fishing.
Protein is huge for what we're doing.
Every one of the expeditions we've been lacking protein.
NARRATOR: The team will head inland to take advantage
of the salmon run.
But they'll have competition.
JARED: Check it out, man.
If it looks good, I'll follow you.
GRADY: Yeah, there's a trail right here.
Right when we got up there, we found a bear trail,
a bear highway.
The bears are so prevalent.
They're huge.
They're just madding down all the vegetation.
JARED: Grady, this is fresh. Fresh bear.
We got to be really careful.
GRADY: Jared, come check this out.
JARED: What do you got?
GRADY: Bear tracks that are completely undeniable.
JARED: Oh my God.
The size of the bear trail alone and the amount of bear scat
that we saw, we knew that we were big time in bear country.
GRADY: Dude, this bear takes the same exact footsteps
every single day.
We've got our three wins right now.
Let's not get hurt.
Let's not get eaten by freaking bear.
NARRATOR: Knowing this leg is do or die,
the first place Endurance athletes charge full speed
ahead.
DALLAS: Knowing that there are so many massive bears here
really should affect our mentality of just racing
through the woods.
But we don't have that option.
We're in a position where we have to win every single leg of
this expedition to actually be able to walk away with a win.
And that's what we're here to do.
We're not giving up on this yet.
It's not over yet.
SEAN: It looks like a... like a bear hotel or something here.
EDDIE: Whoa, look at this. Right here man.
DALLAS: A lot of scat, man.
SEAN: Dude, there are bear beds all around here,
Look at that... like a bear hotel.
EDDIE: See, you can see where, uh, they've been sleeping.
SEAN: To see tracks, we know this is high bear country.
My heart's thumping.
I'm thinking, oh, man, this is it knowing that if it charged
me, I won't be able to defend myself.
All right, let's be vigilant, keep on moving.
Whoa.
DALLAS: Whoa.
Holy cow.
[HOWLING]
NARRATOR: On Afognak Island, the first place Endurance athletes
needs a win to stay alive.
But just a few hours into their trek--
SEAN: Ho! Check it out.
NARRATOR: Big trouble. DALLAS: Holy cow.
There's two cubs, yep.
SEAN: Oh, yeah.
DALLAS: There, she sees us.
We run into these guys in the trees,
she's gonna rip your face off, especially if you get between
her and her cubs.
You're done, man. SEAN: Let's get clear.
DALLAS: We're gonna have to give these guys a wide berth.
SEAN: Let's go up around there.
Suddenly we come across Mama Bear with the two baby cubs.
And that's one thing you do not want to cross.
So we had to go around another route, which took a lot longer.
NARRATOR: Looking to stock up on protein...
THOMAS: Got to keep our heads on a swivel.
NARRATOR: The second place Mountaineers are on the hunt
for Afognak's famed silver salmon.
TYLER: This should be our creek.
Look at this thing, man.
This is beautiful.
MARTY: When you're burning five to 8,000 calories a day,
the lack of food's definitely apparent.
Fortunately, the salmon that have been out in the ocean,
coming to the spawning grounds by the millions.
So now we go fishing.
We need protein.
TYLER: Since you're gonna be having your eyes on the fish,
I'm gonna walk across the creek and get on that high bank
and just kind of watch for bears coming down behind you.
MARTY: Thanks, bud.
TYLER: Lots of fish in here, Marty.
There's hundreds of them swimming around right here.
Yeah, I don't know about you guys but I'm hungry, man.
All this fish in the water make it even worse.
There we go, there we go. Woo-hoo-hoo!
Nice one Thomas! Woo!
Oh, [BLEEP]. Get him.
MARTY: Don't lose it, Thomas.
THOMAS: All right, guys. We got one fish.
We're at least gonna eat tonight.
Yeah, we got another.
MARTY: Oh, we got a devil.
TYLER: [UNINTELLIGIBLE] Marty!
MARTY: Here we go.
THOMAS: That's a keeper. That'll help.
TYLER: Everybody's pulling in fish.
I mean you couldn't go wrong.
You could almost walk across that river there was so much
fish in there.
So it was easy to pull in as many as we could in the short
amount of time we had. Nice one.
THOMAS: Yeah, good job, dude.
NARRATOR: The team's reeling in a feast.
But just when it seems like nothing can stop them...
GRADY: Hey, there's the Mountaineers. Well...
JARED: That looks like a good place to cross.
GRADY: It's a great place to cross.
JARED: Grady and I, we're determined to find this river
where we thought there was gonna be a lot of salmon.
And we run into the Mountaineers.
They're stopped. They're fishing.
So we decided to mess around.
Because that just sends a psychological message.
This is a race, and we want to win.
TYLER: [BLEEP] Man, hey, check this out, guys.
The Military.
GRADY: What's up, guys?
TYLER: Hey, this is our fishing hole, man.
Don't walk through it.
GRADY: Calm down. Hey, we're just crossing.
We're not taking your hole.
MARTY: Hey, hey, hey, easy. GRADY: Yeah, and do what?
MARTY: Easy, I'm fishing right there.
You just scared the school out.
GRADY: No, we're just scaring up towards your hooks.
THOMAS: I really don't appreciate your presence
right now.
So if you could just move on, that'd be great.
JARED: They seemed a little bit irritated.
But if we did scare the fish away, I'm sure they came back.
TYLER: Etiquette, man, étiquette.
There's a certain amount of etiquette you got to have
when guys are fishing in a hole.
And you don't walk across that hole.
And they just stepped in and walked across.
It was kind of a-- it was a bogus move.
NARRATOR: After back tracking to avoid a protective Mama Bear,
the must-win Endurance team falls into second place.
DALLAS: Check it out, guys. EDDIE: Whoa.
DALLAS: I was, uh, taking it out of the wood in here,
just a big tree mushroom.
Apparently, you cook it.
It has the same texture and taste as chicken. So...
SEAN: Let's take at least some of it,
maybe with the beans and rice or something.
EDDIE: I think the more food we have,
the better off we're gonna be, because the gun is against
our head.
And if we don't win it, we're out of it.
DALLAS: All right. Let's hustle.
NARRATOR: Just down the way, they spot another opportunity
to add to their rations.
EDDIE: Check out the squirrel hole.
And you can see all the pine-- pinecone shavings.
So they're up here eating off of these-- these limbs.
This is definitely a squirrel heaven.
DALLAS: There's some in here.
But, man, these trees are tall. Right there.
Back up, man.
[GUNSHOT]
EDDIE: Nice.
DALLAS: Dinner.
SEAN: Boo ya! EDDIE: All right.
DALLAS: Nice chubby one.
Sure enough, Eddie notices a squirrel, boom,
we got meat in the bag.
When we hit our camp, it's not gonna be time to go gather.
It's time to eat, sleep, and get up and run again in the morning.
Make sure we're done. Here we go.
All right, let me throw him in the pack,
and we'll get back on the road. SEAN: We got to keep going.
DALLAS: 'Cause we're on an upswing, man.
Feeling Good. EDDIE: Yeah, all right.
SEAN: Let's go.
NARRATOR: Meanwhile...
With a forest full of hungry bears,
the first place Military team cautiously approaches
their salmon stream.
GRADY: Hey, you hear the stream? JARED: Yeah.
GRADY: Ok, be careful, man.
This is where we're gonna see a bear.
I almost guarantee it.
JARED: Oh, yeah, guarantee they're having lunch right now.
GRADY: Hey, dude, looks like this is the first waterfall
from the stream.
There's a... oh, wow. JARED: Ton of fish out here.
GRADY: Dude, there's hundreds of them.
JARED: Should be easy pickings.
They're everywhere.
NARRATOR: With hundreds of salmon in front of them,
the team eagerly pulls out their makeshift hand lines.
GRADY: This is a matter of eating tonight or not.
Got ya. JARED: Nice, Grady.
GRADY: Feels like I'm not gonna be hungry for very long.
There he is.
Hey, Jared, dude, there's bear real close to here.
Look at this. JARED: Wow.
GRADY: Yeah, I don't want that one.
Dude, that last fish I pulled in had a big ole gaping hole from
from a bear. We put it back.
But it's kind of a reminder that there are bear very close
to here.
And they're hungry.
This is gonna be plenty of dinner, bud.
You want it? You ready?
Holy [BLEEP], dude, bear.
Bear, bear, bear.
We got to go now.
[HOWLING]
NARRATOR: On Afognak, the first place Military team reels
in a feast.
GRADY: [BLEEP] Dude, bear. Bear, bear, bear.
NARRATOR: But a hungry Kodiak wants a piece of the action.
GRADY: We got to go now. JARED: Wow.
GRADY: Hurry up. Holy cow.
JARED: It's huge. My eyes are fixated on this.
I am completely intimidated.
This animal is so big, so powerful.
And I know how fast they can move.
It's time for Grady and I to leave.
GRADY: You loaded? JARED: Of course.
You think I'm gonna bring a dead man's gun to bear country?
They can smell these things a mile away.
NARRATOR: The team's pulled in plenty of protein.
But they now carry a lethal load of bear bait.
JARED: My biggest fear is surprising a bear with
a load full of salmon.
I mean this is many dinners for one of these animals.
Plus, me and Grady. GRADY: Man we got to...
JARED: Shh, shh.
There's one right there.
Keep your eyes on the bear.
GRADY: Let's go now.
JARED: We're down to two guys.
The other teams, they got one additional guy to watch
for bears.
With Rudy, we would be definitely safer.
Fortunately, Grady and I have trained for bear encounters.
NARRATOR: As they secure their catch...
DALLAS: Howdy, howdy. SEAN: Yo.
DALLAS: Well, have fun messing with all those things.
JARED: Oh, we will.
GRADY: If you guys get hungry, come find us.
DALLAS: I think we'll be good. SEAN: Woo! Not too bad, yeah.
We'll be at the finish line waiting for you.
So when you... give us... save some for us, ok?
DALLAS: Tell us how they taste when you come in third.
JARED: Honestly, they're just jealous.
GRADY: All right, you want to take the front with the shotgun.
JARED: Yeah, I think we should still stick carry and carry
in our left hands so we can quick draw.
GRADY: Let's move.
NARRATOR: In third place, the Mountaineers are risking
valuable race time to preserve their salmon for future legs.
THOMAS: Get the stable base there,
and we'll put a fire right in the center right here.
Smoke will come out through a chimney-like area right up
in here.
We've got tons of salmon, so we want to preserve the fish
to sustain our energy levels throughout the next couple of
expeditions and hopefully be able to make the big...
big strong push at the end.
NARRATOR: Native Alaskan, Thomas Ginn,
builds a log smoker the same way his Tlingit ancestors have
for centuries.
As he gathers moss to construct the shell of the smoker-- Marty
and Tyler light a campfire to provide the coals.
TYLER: Smokey.
THOMAS: We should get some smoke in here and get these fish
started pretty quickly so we can have them ready by morning.
NARRATOR: The longer the fish remain in the smoker,
the longer they will keep.
THOMAS: And the smoking begins.
NARRATOR: In second place for the first time in weeks,
the Military team has all the food they can stomach.
JARED: Wow.
GRADY: I'm just gonna eat 'til I can't move tonight.
JARED: Yep.
GRADY: We got massive salmon buffet on the table.
Did some steaks, did some sashimi.
Our plan here is to eat as much fish as possible,
completely gorge ourselves... JARED: Hey, it's done enough.
NARRATOR: After pushing hard for 16 hours,
the first place Endurance team refuels on their stock
of mushrooms and squirrel.
DALLAS: Like Thanksgiving turkey,
only a little bit smaller, huh?
SEAN: Having a squirrel definitely raises your spirit.
And it's amazing how happy you can get over one squirrel.
DALLAS: I'll take the front quarter.
All in all, today was an awesome day.
We were able to substitute our diet a little bit
with a squirrel.
If we keep this rationing and stockpiling when there's
a chance, we can eat enough to be able to really drive us
to the wins we need.
All right, little squirrel, thank you for your nutritious
goodness.
NARRATOR: In last place, after their close call with a bear,
the Mountaineers aren't taking any chances.
MARTY: You got any ideas about what happens if a bear comes
around tonight?
Do you have a plan?
THOMAS: Maybe like setting up a bear perimeter or something
like that.
TYLER: Let's do it.
MARTY: I'll find some things that go bump in the night.
A gold pan maybe.
TYLER: Gold pan, ax.
MARTY: Well, we were camping on a trail this wide and that deep
made by brown bears.
Across that trail, we stretched some fishing line
and the gold pan.
And, you know, the bear's gonna hit the trigger.
And then, boom, it's gonna make noise.
Never, ever in my life have I ever set a bear alarm.
TYLER: Marty, we need a test run on this.
Want to be a bear?
MARTY: You serious?
TYLER: We got to try it out.
MARTY: All right.
TYLER: There it is.
Works like a champ, man. Nice job.
MARTY: [LAUGHS] Don't shoot, don't shoot.
TYLER: Don't shoot. MARTY: All right, let's go.
TYLER: That one's done.
NARRATOR: Darkness falls over Afognak...
But sleeping won't be easy.
[RATTLING]
TYLER: Holy [BLEEP].
Hey, guys, wake up, wake up, wake up. Did you hear that?
Hey, hey, hey, wake up, right there.
THOMAS: What? TYLER: Right there, man.
I heard a bunch of sticks breaking.
MARTY: Where?
TYLER: Right over there down that trail.
Where dude?
Right there.
[RATTLING]
THOMAS: (Bleep) Grab your gun, grab your gun.
MARTY: I can't find the gun.
TYLER: Right there, 20 feet away.
Right there.
I can see him.
He's walking our way.
He's coming right there, right there.
He's coming right towards us. 20 feet away [GUNSHOT]
MARTY: Where is he? Where is it?
TYLER: Ran off right there. You can see it run off.
See it? Right there down the trail.
MARTY: No I can't see it.
TYLER: Yeah, holy crap.
MARTY: Is it gonna come back?
TYLER: They're not sleeping.
MARTY: Are you kidding me?
THOMAS: Uh, I don't think I'm gonna be sleeping again tonight.
NARRATOR: As day two begins...
The Endurance team controls the lead while the military remains
in second.
And the mountaineers trail behind in last.
Making great time, the first place Endurance team can't pass
on the opportunity to load up on salmon.
DALLAS: Even though we're in a good situation with food,
we can always use more food.
The best food that I know of for traveling long distances
out here is salmon.
It's the oils you need.
It's the fat you need.
It's the protein you need.
So we need to take this opportunity to catch some fish
to get us on that last stretch of this-- this run.
Got a fish.
I'm gonna change up my tactic a little bit here.
Come here you little fish.
SEAN: Ho!
EDDIE: There's a bear right there.
SEAN: See how fast, I didn't even see it.
DALLAS: We should probably get a little bit more together.
Focusing on fishing and next thing we see is a big bear
coming down the river right towards Sean.
You want to come back this way. Get close.
EDDIE: Sean!
DALLAS: Sean, why don't you start working your way back here
SEAN: At the same time I'm putting on my shoes,
the bear sees me get smaller, which excites the bear.
EDDIE: Sean, get out of there!
DALLAS: Come on back, Sean!
SEAN: Oh my God.
DALLAS: Get out of there! SEAN: Whoa, whoa!
[HOWLING]
NARRATOR: On Afognak Island...
EDDIE: Sean, get out of there!
DALLAS: Come on back, Sean!
NARRATOR: Sean's staring into the jaws of a charging
Kodiak bear.
SEAN: Oh my God.
DALLAS: Get out of there!
SEAN: Oh, whoa, whoa. Hoo!
DALLAS: Hey, bear!
Get-- hey, Sean! Whoa!
EDDIE: He did the right thing.
He stood up, made himself known, and started to back off.
DALLAS: Keep backing off.
SEAN: I've had a lot of near death experiences,
but I've never had an experience where an animal was that close
to just killing you.
The bear can do that with one swipe.
Man that was close
DALLAS: All right, should about call it good, huh?
SEAN: So we grab the salmon.
And we started running.
DALLAS: You know what, I couldn't think of better
motivation than that right there.
NARRATOR: In last place, the Mountaineers are trudging
through the only clearing they can find-- A bear trail.
MARTY: This looks mighty suspicious.
TYLER: On this island, the vegetation is so thick.
So you got to pick a path of least resistance.
And game trails are the way to go.
There's fish everywhere, fresh eaten carcasses.
Yeah, we're on a bear trail, man.
THOMAS: We're in a race.
And when you're getting headed off by bears around every corner
and on every trail, it's hard.
You know, and it's frustrating.
TYLER: Oh, man.
It's a cub.
Can you see another cub?
Are there two of them?
THOMAS: We see two little baby cubs pop their heads up like
30 feet away from us.
TYLER: Hey, buddy.
MARTY: Where's Mom?
I don't know where the mother is.
I don't know if she's behind me.
I don't know if she's out front, off to the side.
The most dangerous thing you could do in Alaska is walk up on
two little cubs and their mother.
TYLER: Oh, man.
MARTY: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
THOMAS: Whoa, bear!
Hey bear! TYLER: Hey!
THOMAS: She'll be aggressive. This isn't cool.
MARTY: See the size of that head?
[BEAR GROWLS]
It's all good.
TYLER: Back up a little bit.
THOMAS: Back out, guys.
MARTY: All good, it's all good. I'm standing my ground.
THOMAS: Back out. TYLER: All right.
NARRATOR: As a veteran of the Alaskan back country,
Marty knows the best way to protect against a bear attack
is to stand your ground.
TYLER: Hey, bear.
THOMAS: Yo, bear.
TYLER: Hey-o.
Hey, there, Mama.
Easy Mama.
MARTY: Hey, bears.
THOMAS: Hey, bear.
MARTY: Hey!
Uh!
NARRATOR: Lucky for Marty and crew the mama heads in the other
direction.
MARTY: It's leaving.
She basically put herself between us and the cubs
and worked her way down to the salmon stream.
THOMAS: She's got her ears back.
TYLER: She's protecting her cubs.
Look at that, man.
THOMAS: That was way too close, guys.
NARRATOR: Keeping up their rapid pace,
the first place Endurance athletes refuse to let a
daunting river crossing slow them down.
EDDIE: Not looking forward to this.
But this is how we got to get across.
DALLAS: Yeah, well, it definitely looks shallower here.
It's a little deeper up in that pool.
The water's moving fast in here.
EDDIE: Yeah, I'm just gonna eek my way across.
You want to hold my gun?
DALLAS: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
EDDIE: That way, I-- I just-- in case something happens, man.
DALLAS: Sounds good.
EDDIE: Ok.
We knew that we had to cross.
There really just isn't a good way.
The rocks are slippery.
Combine that with the speed of the water,
the temperature of it.
You don't know what you're stepping into.
It's a gamble.
But this is a gamble that we're gonna have to take.
SEAN: Slick rock.
DALLAS: Eddie, Eddie!
SEAN: Oh, whoa, whoa!
Eddie, you all right?
EDDIE: Yeah.
DALLAS: I take it that's not the way to cross.
SEAN: Back the head up.
DALLAS: Yeah, let's go up river a little.
You good? EDDIE: Yeah.
DALLAS: We're gonna go up and cross a little bit higher.
EDDIE: Falling in was the last thing that I wanted to happen.
I definitely don't want to get hurt because what that means is
my whole team's out of the competition.
DALLAS: Are you all right, man?
EDDIE: Yeah, I'm fine.
SEAN: You took a little swim, dude.
Whoa.
DALLAS: Pretty nasty tumble.
That's the right thing.
I mean that's the way to get out of it,
just roll through it and get into the open stuff.
SEAN: Yeah, yep.
EDDIE: I'm lucky I landed on my pack, man.
SEAN: You got a scar there in the back or something, man.
Look like you got a rip. Whoa. EDDIE: Yeah, I got a little
scratch on my ***. DALLAS: Bit you good.
SEAN: Yeah.
EDDIE: A little war wound going on.
DALLAS: That's exactly what we didn't want to have happen.
We don't have time for that.
It's win or die right now.
Fortunately, Eddie's tough as an ox.
So he gets out of that.
He shakes off, puts his pack on.
We're back on the trail.
Hardly any lost time.
EDDIE: Let's keep moving, man. Let's go.
DALLAS: All right.
NARRATOR: In second place, the Military team heads toward
the shore to avoid the bear-filled brush
GRADY: It's windy as [BLEEP].
NARRATOR: But now they're battling a furious
costal downpour.
JARED: Hey, Grady. GRADY: Yo.
JARED: Let's do a map check up here.
GRADY: All right.
Jared and I came into this with three wins.
The Mountaineers have three wins.
And Endurance have one.
We have the option and we took it to take the longer more
secure route, by going on the shoreline.
However, this wind, the storm that came in is definitely
throwing us off track, slowing us down.
We're way, way behind the power curve on this one.
We want to make sure we get to that LZ.
So the map is absolutely critical.
We could be from going on top to be completely
out of the competition if we don't make it there.
JARED: We got to be right there.
There's our cove that we're standing over.
GRADY: You want to go up to that point and see if we can get an
unobstructed view?
JARED: Uh, it's gonna be tough to see through the fog,
but we could try.
GRADY: Kind of disoriented, so we decide to go out to a point
with sheer cliffs on either side right up on the ocean trying
to get a better view of the northern most point
of this island.
JARED: It might be over there.
GRADY: Is that it?
JARED: Let's check the map.
GRADY: Wind is-- it bites through you.
This wind, it's nuts.
*** it.
MALE: [BLEEP]
GRADY: Oh, shoot.
JARED: Grady be careful.... Uhhhh...
NARRATOR: Caught in a fierce storm,
Grady and Jared are getting their bearings when suddenly--
MALE: [BLEEP] Oh, [BLEEP]!
JARED: Grady, be careful!
Uhhh!
Grady.
GRADY: Ah, geez.
JARED: So Grady goes diving after the map.
And in my head, I see him slipping,
falling down 60 feet into jagged rock of really mad ocean.
That is a certain death.
GRADY: I'm good, bud. I'm good. I got some pieces.
JARED: It's just a map.
GRADY: Do you want to be stuck out here?
Ah, geez.
JARED: You all right? GRADY: Yeah, I'm good.
NARRATOR: As the second place Military reaches safety,
they discover they're missing a crucial section of the map.
JARED: We got like three pieces of the map.
GRADY: The piece of the map we got didn't complete the puzzle.
We're still not sure where we are.
We still have quite a ways to go to get to
the northernmost point.
Could end pretty poorly for Jared and I.
Well, we got another cove right up here,
which if I remember the map correctly before we lost it--
JARED: Grady, if this isn't it, I have no idea where we are.
GRADY: Yeah, I'm on the same page, man.
NARRATOR: Without a complete map,
the team must rely on their gut to reach the LZ
on the northernmost point of the island.
JARED: That could be the point.
GRADY: But we're cliffed out.
Let's go inland and go get there.
JARED: Moving forward from here on out, we have a good idea.
But the map's out.
GRADY: [BLEEP] Slippery, watch it.
JARED: It's up to instinct, and we have a limited amount of time
to get to the landing zone.
NARRATOR: As the sun sinks lower in the sky and the storm
retreats, the teams settle in for the night.
In first place, the Endurance athletes reluctantly make camp
in thick bear country.
DALLAS: We got to get a win in the bag.
SEAN: It's the last night before extraction.
Whoa.
DALLAS: What's that?
EDDIE: Did you hear that?
SEAN: Like a branch?
DALLAS: Yeah, right down there.
There's a big ole bear right down there.
That's a big guy.
Hey, bear.
[CLANGING]
EDDIE: Hey bear. DALLAS: Go on.
EDDIE: Hey bear. Hey bear.
SEAN: Man, I think maybe we should change the strategy up.
What do you guys think? Eddie?
EDDIE: Yeah, man, that-- that scared the [BLEEP] out of me.
They're close.
SEAN: You guys want to do it in shifts maybe?
One of us stays up while the other two sleep.
And then we can trade off every, what, hour or so, two hours.
EDDIE: Yeah, I think-- yeah, I think every two hours.
SEAN: Yeah.
DALLAS: Through the night, we're gonna be taking turns basically
keeping that fire big sitting there with a gun on bear watch.
So it's, uh, definitely gonna be a restless night of sleep.
You go first, Eddie?
EDDIE: Yeah, I'll-- I'll stay up for a few.
DALLAS: Then, uh, if you just want to wake me up.
And then I'll just hand this off to-- to Sean when I-- I get you
up, right? EDDIE: Yeah.
SEAN: That sounds good. EDDIE: Yeah, man.
DALLAS: I'll leave the, uh, gold pan, bear scare there.
Right when you start feeling cozy.
NARRATOR: As Eddie stands guard...
The second place Military team calls it a night.
JARED: Feels a lot later than 11.
GRADY: I'm pretty well beat.
JARED: I'm telling you, bro. The hammocks are...
BOTH: The way to go.
GRADY: Got to be pretty miserable to wake up getting
your face eaten off by a bear.
JARED: I'll second that.
GRADY: All right, dude, I'm out of here.
JARED: All right, man, we'll see you in the morning.
NARRATOR: Day three on Afognak...
Still maintaining the lead, the Endurance team is just five
miles from the LZ, while the Military remains in second.
And the Mountaineers bring up the rear.
Without a map to guide them,
the Military team's in trouble.
GRADY: I'm turned around man.
JARED: We might be lost.
We don't have a map.
We don't have a compass.
We're out of options.
Well, check it out, on this side of the tree,
there's not nearly as much moss.
Moss is favoring one side.
GRADY: Yeah, it should be the north, right?
JARED: And in the northern hemisphere,
moss grows on the north side of trees.
NARRATOR: To set their course, the team relies on a primitive
navigation technique learned in the military.
JARED: So we got to hedge our bets on north being that way.
And that's where the LZ is.
GRADY: Yeah, but it's not definitive.
I guess we just got to go with it.
We're completely behind the curve.
I mean we don't have a map.
We don't know where we are.
Getting to that-- that northernmost point is gonna be
a very difficult task.
And we don't have very much time to do it.
Fingers crossed, man.
NARRATOR: Knowing they need to win,
the first place Endurance athletes kick into high gear.
EDDIE: Our strategy now is just to haul ***.
SEAN: Even though the Mountaineers have won more,
the Military have won more, they're very, very, very strong.
I feel that we-- we're just getting stronger.
There it is.
DALLAS: Got a ways to go, huh?
Is that-- it's that right there?
EDDIE: Right there, that's where we need to get to.
That's a long haul, man.
NARRATOR: With the LZ in sight, the team devises a strategy that
will maximize their speed and endurance.
DALLAS: Do we go 30 minutes, take two-minute breaks?
Do we take 45 and 10-minute breaks?
Do we do an hour and 15-minute breaks?
We can break it up any way we want. So...
SEAN: Maybe do a five-minute break first, see if that works.
DALLAS: We're running at a good pace out here.
We're covering a lot of ground.
You can't do that non-stop.
Hey, what do you want to do? Like 30 and-- or 45?
SEAN: 45. DALLAS: Let's do 45.
That's a good medium. SEAN: 45 and five.
DALLAS: We kind of establish between us,
we all feel comfortable going 45 minutes at a time, stop,
take about a five-minute break, get back on the road again.
All right. SEAN: Let's go.
NARRATOR: In third place desperate to make up time,
the Mountaineers make a shocking discovery.
TYLER: Wait a second.
I'm confused 'cause that river is supposed to be going that way
And it's going that way.
MARTY: That river is going to the ocean.
What the [BLEEP].
TYLER: All rivers flow to the ocean,
and this sucker's going that way.
So it has-- the ocean has to be that way.
We're going inland right now, got turned around somewhere else
MARTY: [BLEEP] All morning, we've been going
the wrong direction.
[HOWLING]
NARRATOR: On Afognak Island--
TYLER: Wait a second, I'm confused 'cause that river's
supposed to be going that way.
And it's going that way.
NARRATOR: With only two hours until the cutoff,
the Mountaineers discover they've been traveling
in the wrong direction all morning.
MARTY: That river is going to the ocean that way.
And we're traveling this way.
Ever since we left camp, we've been going the wrong direction.
Uh, there's a possibility we won't make the LZ.
And I'm not joking.
TYLER: We're losing time really fast.
THOMAS: We need to just double-timing it.
MARTY: Let's just keep this river in sight and head back.
NARRATOR: With the clock ticking fast,
both the Mountaineers and their Military rivals are nowhere near
the LZ and face the devastating possibility of missing
the extraction.
DALLAS: Come on, guys.
Let's get out.
SEAN: Come on, fellas.
Ow!
NARRATOR: In the lead, the Endurance athletes reach
the ocean, but the jagged coastal cliffs block
their path to the LZ, the northernmost tip of the island.
DALLAS: Hey, guys, let's take a look.
Probably the biggest challenge on this whole route
navigation-wise is gonna be to try to get and hit that little
land bridge.
This whole thing's ocean on either side.
It's just a little peninsula of land out here,
and you've got to hit that little land bridge.
That's going to be some tough travel.
SEAN: Yep.
DALLAS: As we're getting closer to the extraction point,
this is the moment of truth.
We know that if we come around the bend and see that knoll
that we need to hit and there's already somebody standing there,
we're done.
Looks like the fun starts here.
JARED: My greatest concern at this point is making it
to the LZ.
If we don't make it there, it's an automatic disqualifier.
We're done.
Let's go.
MARTY: I still hear the river.
I still hear the river.
TYLER: Yeah, still off to our left.
DALLAS: Keep on chugging, guys.
EDDIE: Right on, fellas.
NARRATOR: With under an hour to go and no map to guide them,
the Military has only one choice, follow the coastline.
GRADY: We got zero time.
We're in a definite fight against time.
It's do or die.
We gotta run.
We gotta beat feet to get to the-- the northernmost point
on time or we're gonna miss this extraction.
We're gonna be completely out of the race.
THOMAS: You guys, we need to hurry up, man.
Definitely in jeopardy of missing extraction.
DALLAS: Doing awesome, man.
SEAN: There's that point.
DALLAS: That's it.
EDDIE: We see the point in sight.
And I'm thinking-- We may still be in this.
Almost there.
See anybody?
SEAN: Nope.
All right, all right.
Yeah! EDDIE: Yeah!
SEAN: That makes it all worth it, yeah, fellas.
EDDIE: Yeah!
There's just this great swelling of joy and relief within me.
Oh, it feels so good to win.
I can tell you right now my heart is just singing knowing
that we're still in this competition.
SEAN: We are just getting started.
DALLAS: We're still in this thing.
NARRATOR: With this win, the Endurance athletes maintain
a shot at the title.
DALLAS: Check it out.
Woo! EDDIE: Woo!
NARRATOR: As the team enjoys its bear barrel reward.
EDDIE: Wonder where the other guys are at?
NARRATOR: There's still no sign of the competition.
DALLAS: Not much time left before we got to be out of here.
NARRATOR: As the extraction boats approach the LZ...
The military team finally lays eyes on the finish.
DALLAS: Hey... [YELLING]
JARED: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, it's cliffed out.
DALLAS: Go that way! SEAN: Go to go to the ridge.
EDDIE: This way. DALLAS: Got to go around.
GRADY: Go that way.
JARED: We're cliffed out.
Let's find another way.
SEAN: That way.
DALLAS: It's all cliffs. There's a way out over there.
GRADY: Off in the distance, we see the Endurance team already
at the finish line.
And they're telling us, no, no, no, don't go any further,
don't go any further.
Because if we did, we would be dead as nails.
EDDIE: Man, they almost ran right off that cliff.
DALLAS: I know. They were moving for that edge.
NARRATOR: Meanwhile...
TYLER: Marty, right here. Hey, right here.
Let's go here.
Whoa, whoa.
MARTY: Ocean, man.
There it is, wide blue.
TYLER: There it is. Ocean, point.
MARTY: This is the point. Point, look.
DALLAS: Hey, dudes, dudes, dudes, check it out.
SEAN: Whoa, no. EDDIE: No.
THOMAS: Hey, guys, look. It's the Endurance.
TYLER: Oh, no, they're right there.
THOMAS: We finally get to where the river meets the ocean there.
And we bust out on the ridgeline.
And we see Endurance sitting there.
Thank God they were still sitting there 'cause we thought
we might've missed the extraction.
SEAN: Yo [INAUDIBLE]
DALLAS: You got to go this way!
It's all cliffs over there.
TYLER: Let's go-- they're pointing.
Where are they-- they're pointing at something.
THOMAS: Turn around, go, go, go. I'm glad they're still here.
TYLER: Where are they pointing at?
DALLAS: Follow it around.
And then there's a trail down.
SEAN: The Military are right ahead of you.
MARTY: Let's go, man.
GRADY: Go. We're edging on the side of this cliff.
If we fall down, you know, we're done for.
TYLER: Let's go.
Let's go, Marty.
GRADY: And to add to it, we hear and see the mountain men.
THOMAS: Watch your step here.
SEAN: You got it, Marty.
Woo!
JARED: Grady, there's the boat.
TYLER: Marty, let's do it.
DALLAS: Here they come.
SEAN: Here they go.
Hey guys! [YELLING]
Always running hard. I love it.
We love it. Woo!
[YELLING]
GRADY: How does it feel to be back in the game, guys?
SEAN: Right on. [YELLING]
ALL: Marty! Marty!
SEAN: Yeah! [YELLING] Good job.
MARTY: Are you first? SEAN: Yeah, sure.
First in our hearts.
JARED: There's the boat right there.
Just barely made it. MARTY: Woo! Woo-hoo!
NARRATOR: Claiming their second victory,
the Endurance Athletes trail the others by one leg and remain in
the running for the title of Ultimate Alaskan Survivor.
DALLAS: Coming off a win is a huge boost going into the next
expedition.
We're looking at the fact that we still have hope.
We're still in this thing.
And we have what it takes to win.
GRADY: Hit it.
DALLAS: Woo!
Hell yeah!
TYLER: I tell you what, this one's a tough one.
It's a mental game, you know?
But we're close enough to the finish line where
we got to keep going.
And may the best team win.
EDDIE: Bye-bye!
Bye-bye, woo!
NARRATOR: Next up...
Kodiak Island, giant brown bears, thick forest,
and jagged cliffs.
