MUZIKI SAFARINI(MS)
May I take this opportunity to welcome you all to the
MUZIKI SAFARINI series.
I am Tegemea Champanda your comrade in spiritual Music.
Foremost, let's thank our Creator and ask for
His guidance.
Let's pray;
Father, creator of heavens and earth,
I thank you for opportunity to learn of your greatness
through Muziki Safarini.
It's my desire that your Holy Spirit guides any one
who thirsts and hungers for praising you through music.
Refresh us now in this pilgrimage to heaven
I ask all these through the precious name of our saviour
Jesus Christ. Amen!
For over 35 years now, I have continued to enjoy and
take part in spiritual music activities
that involves musicians from diverse
age groups, gender, beliefs and social status.
As the result, I have been blessed from such experience.
It's my humble prayer that by God's grace
we share such blessings
via multimedia channels including:
DVDs, internet (online videos),
smart phones and small interesting book volumes
that will enrich your spiritual experience
causing happiness and inner most peace.
Since our contemporary world demands time sharing,
The episodes have been made precisely short
yet covering core areas of spiritual music.
MS intends to offer choice for viewers/ listeners/
readers to interact with any topic of their interest.
The aspects of study considered
include
objectives,plenary,sphere,activities,resources and assessment.
viewers/listeners/readers have been given opportunity to
share their thoughts and ideas through
opinions, question & answers, proposing next topic and etc.
As time unfolds; needs and wishes made known,
the lessons will continue to bless your heart.
One episode will be aired
at the end of every month
commencing Aprili 2013
Objectives.
One of the challenges that I have experienced
with many musicians
who take part in spiritual songs/music (gospel musicians),
is choosing appropriate songs/music that
bear a balanced view in 'theme' na 'mood'.
A match and balance between occassion and emotion
remains a challenge.
The Muziki Safarini(MS) Objectives
are divided as follows:
the first section is about Music and the Bible
When spiritual musicians meet
for whatever reasons, the first thing to do should be
to share a short inspirational reading for encouragement.
Again, I emphasize, an inspirational word.
This is a short session for scripture sharing.
The Bible should be given its first priority
during music rehearsals even in other music ministries.
The scripture sharing should be precisely short.
I hope for better examples from these series
that will demonstrate on how you can
run interesting and creative sessions full of fun!
The next thing is music rehearsals.
Rehearsals are such crucial moments of a musician.
The next thing after the inspirational reading,
is musical rehearsals.
English people refer to it as 'never miss'
You should never miss rehearsals they are
very important part of singing or music sessions.
For a singer, vocal training exercises are important
before singing.
There are many vocal training exercises
that a singer can benefit from.
We will explore some of the
vocal training technics including:
breathing technics,
Jaw drop,
Music accent and resonance
Voice control,
Voice wakening, opening and loosen up and etc
Those are just few vocal exercises during rehearsals.
There are plenty of exercises for music instrumentalists.
Music instruments readily available to Tanzanians,
include guitars and keyboards.
Therefore the rehearsal will be customized accordingly
to cover guitars and keyboards.
We hope that by so doing
musicians will benefit directly
as well as viewers/listeners/readers
who will have chance to contribute.
Another section deals with
Songs, Choruses and Instrumental music.
There are things that musicians must adhere to
in order to render acceptable service.
Among topics given priority in these series
include how to select and use songs and hymns.
Unfortunately, Kiswahili can't differentiate between
'songs' na 'hymns'.
both words are termed 'nyimbo'.
We will try to explore their similarities and differences
in the Muziki Safarini series.
One of subtopics discussed under
Songs, Choruses and Instrumental music
is the purpose of songs
and the use of them.
Forexample during ocassions like baptism, prayer meetings,
campaigns, funerals, visiting the sick etc
This is just one sub section.
The next one is
The music must connect with the audience
from the real world to real worship.
The songs should have integrity.
have vulnerability
and meaningful.
Another aspect deals with
the flow of songs.
Monitor how you modulate from one song
to the next in a
given sequence.
It is advisable to plan your songs well in advance.
The tempo of songs
is also something to consider
Issues that lie with tempo of songs include
musicians misplacing appropriate use of tempos.
use an up beat song instead of slow beat
and vice versa.
Another subtopic that I have struggled with
in getting swahili translation is Music range
This is a problem but rather a challenge.
It refers to comfortable zone; C3 to C5 of standard keyboard.
Swahili has adopted the term Octaves to 'Oktavo'.
Such scales will be visited.
Next item is about learning
and singing songs.
advisable scale for composing easy learn-and-sing songs
is Stanza-Chorus or Verse-Chorus format.
Those are just few topics of discussion
under section: Songs, Choruses and Instrumental music.
Another section deals with correct sequencing.
The fourth objective looks at Kipengele cha nne katika malengo kinazungumzia juu ya
Correct sequencing of songs.
I am a witness of some beautiful songs that have disastrously
lost their effect due to poor sequencing.
At times people ask me of whose fault is it?
Who should bear responsibility?
Whom to blame?
At times, nothing appears wrong with
individual music tracks except sequencing.
We will try to demonstrate on
good sequencing and poor sequencing.
This section will deal with
conflict resolutions.
Conflict resolution will be discussed
looking into strategies on how to deal with
conflicts from within and without.
Waswahili people normally say
Hoes can't help bashing into each other when stored together.
Some singing groups ended up disfunctional
even sparkling sharp arguments as the result of conflicts.
It is worthy remembering that such groups
are made up of people from diverse gender and background.
Thus without serious strategies
that looks into relations and communication,
many groups will be deemed vulnerable.
At times agreeing to disagree may be the option.
It is important that you acknowledge the differences.
Thus our differences should not be allowed over service.
When does this happen?
All these in conflict resolution section.
Further to objectives
follow on
Plenary
This section begins with aim of the lesson,
then objectives
and activities
that are subcategorized into:
Seminar, workshop, lecture and case-study
All the above fall under plenary
Next exploration falls under
sphere of study.
Among the elements of discussion under sphere
includes music for
Mass, wedding/parties/visiting the sick/needy/
funeral services, spiritual gatherings,
camp meetings, public evangelism, church services.
These are church services that go on weekly
or several times a week basis.
Next to plenary is
activities sections.
This means that as the lessons progresses
there will be some activities to do
in forms of groups, discussions, worksheets
All these in Muziki Safarini.
The section of resources will bear
references and further readings
in forms of: books,
other tools including DVDs, VCDs, VHS,CDs and
modern gadgets; ipods, ipads, flash players etc
Internet is another resource.
Last but not least is assessments.
We will recap the lesson from the beginning
to where we stopped
assessing important aspects of learning;
plenary, objectives and activities.
There will be an opportunity to
revisit the covered subject of discussion and
be able to answer any questions
and receive comments from
viewers/listeners/readers/
that will hint on areas of need that require further study.
May God bless you
as we embark on Muziki safarini series.
