Hey, we’re back with more of the Capcom Arcade Cabinet. This is the third game we’ve
looked at from this collection, but it’s the first one in which...I actually haven’t
played the original arcade game. In fact, the only Avenger I knew of was the New Wave
of British Heavy Metal band.
This is definitely not them. Not fast enough.
Plus, it’s a video game.
Nonetheless, that’s one of the great things about compilations, right? Finding games you
never played before. Although...I mean, it does seem a little out of place next to a
hugely popular game like 1943, but whatever. Avenger is a fun little brawler in its own
right, even if this application of “classic” seems to reference age over quality.
I’ll tell you what Avenger gets right, though. It’s set in Paradise City, and your objective
is to rescue hot chicks. I don’t even like Guns ‘n Roses, but that’s awesome. There’s
an evil guy named Geshita, and it’s your job to beat up all of his minions before doing
the same to him. Then you galavant off with the girls.
I’m guessing they’re pretty.
On an unrelated note, the grass may or may not be green.
So this is obviously a beat ‘em up, but...it’s not really a great one. It’s sort of repetitive,
and it doesn’t have the character appeal to compensate for that. Or the variety. So
you basically just hammer the kick button until the screen is clear, then you move on.
You can also find power-ups and projectiles, but there aren’t that many. I mean, more
weapons and items might’ve made things interesting.
As it is...it’s not that interesting.
Of course, that’s not to say it’s bad, either. This is a perfectly decent arcade
brawler, actually. It plays and looks just fine, and one nice touch is that...there are
secret areas in each level. So you might kick through a wall or something more obvious,
like a garage door. And that leads you to little bonus rooms.
And obviously, Avenger comes with all the Capcom Arcade Cabinet trimmings. There’s
online multiplayer, which is a huge plus for a game like this, as well as this casual mode,
training modes, unlockable content...the usual. These are nice, shiny versions of these games,
and all the new stuff makes the price seem fair.
So if you’re buying pack one for 1943, know that...Avenger isn’t bad, either.
The game, not the band. The band is f*cking awesome.
