Hello, I'm Dr. Glenn Hirsch and I'm the director of UCCS,
University of Minnesota Counseling and Consulting Services.
Thanks for taking a few moments to learn more about us.
When you came to the U you were probably thinking about making new friends
and having exciting learning opportunities.
You probably weren't thinking about going to counseling.
But life, as they say, is what happens when you're making other plans.
For a lot of students, life at college can include the unexpected -
not getting the grades you want,
difficulty figuring out a major that works for you,
or personal and relationship problems that are interfering
with your academic success.
When these experiences come up for you,
UCCS can help.
UCCS offers one-on-one counseling,
group counseling,
classes and workshops to help you resolve personal,
academic
and career concerns.
Most of our services are by appointment,
but we also offer same-day walk-in crisis counseling
for urgent situations that just can't wait.
Now, I've been around for a while, and I've heard all the excuses:
"You have to be really messed up to go to counseling."
"I don't want everyone knowing about my stuff."
"I don't have the money to pay for counseling."
Well, here are 3 things that you need to know about UCCS.
1 - the students who come to UCCS aren't messed up.
They're experiencing the typical challenges college students face,
and they are smart enough to realize that seeking help
really can make things better.
2 - All of our counseling is confidential.
We only release information about you when you request it
or in an emergency situation
to make sure that you'll be safe.
Faculty and staff do not have access to information about your counseling
without your consent.
3 - Counseling services are free to most degree-seeking University students.
You can find us in Appleby Hall on the Minneapolis Campus,
Coffey Hall on the St. Paul campus,
and starting in Fall 2012 we'll be offering counseling
in some residence halls and on the Minneapolis West Bank.
Your first visit is a consultation and there's no obligation
to continue counseling after that.
And if you're a faculty or staff member
you should know that UCCS offers consultation to the University community
on promoting student personal and academic success,
as well as on how to create and sustain a respectful, safe
and caring environment
for students in your campus setting.
