Steve Smart here, with a marketing moment.
Actually, today's subject has nothing to do with marketing.
But you know I love to help business owners succeed and this could help you if you're
a small business owner or a solopreneur.
I was recently talking with a good business friend about the importance of our data.
I mentioned that I have a habit of cloning my hard drive.
She wanted to know more, so I decided to make a video to share with others.
You probably have a plan to back up your business files. That's pretty important.
Here's what I want you to ask yourself: "What if my hard drive crashes? What happens to
my programs?"
I had this happen once. Man, it was painful. Sure, I had my files backed up, but it took
a long time to get all my programs installed. And then there were all my favorites saved
in my browser and other preferences.
One thing I lost was a very convenient thing that indicated when my caps lock was on. I
never recovered that. And it's kind of a pain in the butt when I'm entering passwords.
I later learned how to clone my hard drive. You can do this for a desktop or a laptop.
This is an external hard drive. Just about every day I use this to back up my business
files. The process takes about an hour. It does NOT back up my operating system, programs
or preferences.
This is an internal hard drive, similar to the one in my desktop PC. It has about the
same storage space as the one currently in my computer.
Every month I make an exact duplicate of my hard drive using this little gizmo called
the DriveWire made by Apricorn
This process takes several hours. It duplicates everything on my hard drive - operating system,
programs and preferences... Everything. If my hard drive were to crash I would simply
take this drive out of the fireproof safe where I store it and replace the drive that
crashed. The computer won't know any different and I'm good to go. The only thing I'd have
to do is drop in my files from the external drive so I'm not missing a thing.
Now I feel a lot better that my data is protected and my down time will be minimized if I have
a crash or terrible virus.
Well, I hope that helps you.
This is Steve Smart the marketing guy.
