Coming into college, a lot of my professors always told me that
if you get an internship and you do well they just might hire
you and I definitely know that I might get into broadcast or print, so
throughout my entire college career, I decided
to intern at both broadcast places and print places so that I can
hopefully land a job upon graduation.
My first internship at Hofstra was through the Mineola Patch,
it's an affiliate of AOL, and
the first time I interned I was in charge of
all the writing I was able to go out and cover my own
stories, take my own photos and have everything published.
After that I started to
think about public relations and I interned at a boutique firm
called Nicholas and Len's Communications and after that, this semester I interned
at Details Magazine, and it was really fun it was my first time at a magazine
it was print and I learned how to pitch stories and
how to research, how to really, really research. In the summer I'll
intern with Lou Dobbs Tonight at Fox Business Channel. The Career Center has really helped me a lot with
getting internships. The first time I came into the Career Center was
my freshman because during orientation, my orientation leader told me about it.
I'm the president of the Hofstra University Association of Black Journalists and last semester we
started an initiative where we do career workshopsand
people from the Career Center know we're coming to meetings and to events
and we'll hold cover letter workshops and resume workshops and I really helped build
membership. What I like most about interning
is that you get real-world experience. you really know
how important it is to come in, be on time do everything with a smile on your face
and know that there's people out there who are willing to hire you
only if you do the work. Nothings going to be handed to you. Advice that I would give to
students that want an
internship is to first get involved on campus because a lot of people are
afraid, they say well 'I don't have enough on my resume
for internship' but getting involved on campus shows that you have initiative.
Moving forward with my career, I'm really looking to
becoming a news reporter. I really want to
be able to land a job right outta right out of college and to know
this is what I want and I'll be happy with it.
