I'm here in Woking to announce that
we want local authorities the length and breadth of the country
to do the sort of things that Woking has been doing for years,
which is putting in renewable energy
like the solar canopy behind me.
Like, for example, photovoltaics on local government buildings,
making sure that there are biomass projects, energy-from-waste projects.
Anything we can do to produce more of our electricity at home
means that the country as a whole benefits,
because we're less reliant on
extremely volatile oil and gas supplies
from often very difficult parts of the world.
And it's good for local council tax payers,
because projects like this can actually make money
and reduce the council tax bill. It's a win-win.
