00:06 COMM: The slums of Brazil are notorious for
crime, poverty and their run down appearance.
00:12 COMM: But two Dutch artists are showing that
with just a lick of paint, these areas can be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour.
00:21 COMM: Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn employ
local youths to spruce up their own neighbourhoods and improve community spirit.
00:30 COMM: Their latest Brazilian project, in the
Santa Marta favela, involve more than twenty youths. Using a window cleaner's platform
and abseiling equipment, they painted thirty four buildings in bright pink, yellow and
greens.
00:44 DRE: It's just a matter of finding out how
and finding out what paths to use and how to get everything done.
00:51 JEROEN: As you can imagine it's not that simple
to paint, say, sixteen hundred houses in a difficult environment such as a favela.
01:00 DRE: Y'know we will find the way towards that
result, and that is very exciting, by itself.
01:09 COMM: With the Santa Marta artwork proving
such a huge success, Jeroen and Dre want to expand the project into other areas.
01:21 COMM: And with the World Cup and Olympics
both on the horizon, these artists hope their paintings will promote a brighter future
for the residents of Rio's favelas.
