A haka group is preparing themselves to travel
to London to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Trevor Maxwell is in charge of the kapa haka group
who will be flying out in June.
A waka and its 14 paddlers will be joining
the haka group to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.
Tamahou Temara is one of those paddlers
and he joins us now.
How are the preparations going?
We're all excited to go to London in June
to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. So we had a get-together last month,
and next month we’ll get-together again in Waikato to practice
for this event.
There might be some who wonder,
why should Maori bother celebrating England's event?
What would you say to them?
If we look at ourselves as Maori, we've been participating in events
overseen by the Queen of England for years.
There's World War I and II,
where we fought under the monarchy.
This here commemorates those labours.
Furthermore, Pakeha and Maori are bound in a partnership
by the Treaty.
So we go, not only to represent Maori people, but all people of NZ.
We'll go and journey up the river Thames.
Tamahou Temara, thank you for your time.
