HERE AT IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE. I'D LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE LEARNING DISABILITIES
PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES SERVICES AND ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES.
ONE OF THE MORE IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF THE LEARNING DISABILITIES PROGRAM IS TO
PROVIDE INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT. THESE ASSESSEMENTS DETERMINE IF A STUDENT IS ELIGIBLE FOR
SERVICES AND ACCOMMODATIONS PROVIDED BY THE DISABLED STUDENTS PROGRAM AND SERVICES.
THEY ALSO PROVIDE DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE STUDENT'S ACHIEVEMENT IN READING, WRITING,
SPELLING, VOCABULARY, AND MATH. ALSO MEASURED IS HOW STUDENTS PROCESS VARIOUS KINDS OF
INFORMATION LIKE SEQUENCING, LONG AND SHORT TERM MEMORY, SPATIAL SKILLS, AND ATTENTION
TO VISUAL DETAIL THAT DETERMINES POTENTIAL FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS. IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE
PROGRAM, A STUDENT MUST COMPLETE AN IN-DEPTH SURVEY REGARDING BACKGROUND INFORMATION,
ANY HEALTH ISSUES, AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS. A STUDENT ALSO MUST DEMONSTRATE THROUGH
ASSESSMENT MINIMUM ACHIEVEMENT AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING LEVELS.
IN ADDITION, A STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE A PROCESSING DEFICIT AND A DISCREPANCY BETWEEN
ABILITY AND ACHIEVEMENT. IN OTHER WORDS, A STUDENT WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY HAS AVERAGE
TO ABOVE AVERAGE POTENTIAL FOR LEARNING BUT THAT POTENTIAL IS NOT TRANSFERRING TO ACTUAL
READING, WRITING, SPELLING AND/OR MATH SKILLS. STUDENTS CAN SELF-REFER BY CALLING THE
LEARNING DISABILITIES SPECIALIST DIRECTLY OR A STUDENT MAY BE REFERRED BY AN INSTRUCTOR
