The Forensic Archaeology course brings theories, principles and methodologies of archaeology
into the forensic domain. At Bournemouth we are extremely well equipped to deal with student
training and produce students with a high level of professional, practical experience.
>> This is a stimulated mass grave. We have a number of our own students who do this as
an additional course in relation to other things they are studying for their degreees.
This involves a search for usually buried material or sometimes material that’s scattered
on the surface or has been there for a while. Location, and then the scientific and the
systematic recovery of buried material in a way that will have integrity if it is later
presented in court.
>> So the best thing about my course I would say is the more practical fieldwork, sort
of getting out there and doing stuff that is related to your course. So a couple of
weeks ago they did this thing where they set up a crime scene and we had to go out and
dig up bodies and then later on incorporate it in the courtroom and sort of had to present
our findings.
>> Students coming to study Forensic Archaeology at Bournemouth University will be taught by
practicing professionals within the discipline and they're working with a department that
is setting the standard.
>> We have a very broad range of guest lecturers and we try and make sure that we expose our
students to as many top people from as many different disciplines as possible.
>> The professors here are so skilled. We have guest lecturers coming in and just the
networking is pretty cool.
>> A number of our members of staff have been involved with excavating mass graves in various
parts of the world. Places like the former Yugoslavia or Iraq, in relation to human rights
violations, in relation to war crimes, and essentially in relation to recent events.
>> I think my career prospectives are pretty broad. I can do police work and go into crime
scene investigation or I can go into just generally archaeological things.
>> You can literally pick a continent and you can find someone, or often a large number
of people, who’ve formally been through Bournemouth University's courses, particularly
our Forensics courses and who are now engaging in that kind of work in the real world, so
we do pretty well with it.
>> I think students should choose Bournemouth University because the fieldwork is amazing,
the course work is amazing. I mean, I love living in Bournemouth I actually don't want
to go home. It's just so calm, chilled out, and peaceful here. I love it.
