Hi, I’m Jennifer Kaika, VP2 of PCRID.
You may have seen announcements about the upcoming PCRID meeting and workshop on February 9th
entitled “The Landscape of Interpreting in DC and Maryland.”
You also may have wondered what exactly that title is referring to.
If you have, let me explain...
PCRID has decided on a theme for all events this year: “Engaging the Whole Community.”
In order to do this, we have to first define the “whole community.”
For example, how many interpreters are there in our area? How many of us are deaf? How many are hearing?
What are our racial demographics? How many are certified & how many aren’t?
Are there any other interpreting organizations in the area, and if so,
who holds the leadership positions in those organizations?
What are our local Deaf organizations and who holds the leadership positions in those organizations?
Where are the schools for the Deaf, are there any college and universities that teach ASL or have Deaf Studies programs?
At the conclusion of the workshop, the general meeting (and lunch!) will begin.
This is a time for the membership and others in attendance to share their ideas, thoughts, and concerns.
The meeting and workshop will be held in Landover Hills, MD at
St. Francis of Assisi, the Deaf congregation of the Archdiocese of Washington.
Lunch will be from The Standard, a Virginia-based restaurant and catering company
owned by Matt O’Varanese, who is also deaf.
Of course, we also have to thank our two sponsors, Baltimore-based HASA, and ASL,
Inc. Thank you for your support.
I hope to see you on Saturday, February 9th at 9:00 am to learn more about YOUR
community!
