It's clear there is a link between diet and cancer. We see this in all laboratory studies.
It's a very, very strong link. But, through the 90s and the mid 2000s, most of the studies
on humans which were surveys, were not finding any link and it was a very perplexing thing;
we know there is a link and we know having a healthy diet is protective against all kinds
of cancer.
What we did as an analysis we released that people were over estimating the quality of
the instruments they were using and by doing an experiment, then applying our statistical
techniques in whats called measurably modeling, we recognized that the studies were too small
by a factor of two and a half.
So we were able to do a new survey the NIH-AARP study at diet and health where we apply that
two and a half point factor and it turned out that ten years later after a follow up
that breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and colon cancer, the researchers were able to show
that there was definitely a link in these studies. So we know it's true in biology and
now we know it's true in humans through these surveys and my contribution that I like to
think of, I helped convince people to make the study large enough based on statistical
principles so that they could actually find something that really is there.
