Hi, I'm William Richey, I'm an executive manager with American Eagle Security in Springfield
Oregon. And I'm going to tell you about some of the hardest things or hardest days I've
had as a security officer. Some of the hardest parts of being a security officer is the fact
that the shifts are night shifts mostly, they're graveyard. Sometimes they tend to be 12 hour
shifts, and 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning you're all by yourself, and it's hard to stay
awake sometimes. Some of the hardest parts of the job is just the boredom, there's hours
upon hours of boredom. A good joke in the industry is, hours and hours of boredom, followed
by seconds of terror. Go into the seconds of terror, an example of that is, we do a
lot of security for a local speedway. And there's a lot of race fans there that drink
fairly heavily, and we have fights break out occasionally. And a few weeks ago we had a
pretty big fight break out, and we're all trying to separate the people, I ended up
getting grabbed by a guy from behind in a choke hold, and had to defend myself, and
ended up having to have the ambulance and the police come out to take some people to
jail and give some people some first aid treatments. And myself and none of the other officers
were injured in that incident, but it can get pretty physical at times. And I say the
boredom along with the physical defense, having to defend yourself occasionally would be a
couple of the hardest parts about the job of a security officer.
