Hi I’m Emily…and I’m Mike.
This is our entry for the IJA Tutorial Competition.
The Trick is 3 Count Behind the Head Passing.
Before attempting this pattern, it helps if you’re comfortable with a normal 3 count.
You might want to take a minute and warm up by passing a 3 count with your partner.
It also helps to be able to do 1 up 180s
As with any passing pattern, it’s essential that you find yourself a partner.
It helps if you and your partner about the same height...
but it’s not necessary!
We also recommend that you can juggle behind the head.
When you’re doing behind the head throws in this pattern, there are a couple things you should keep in mind:
The first one is to move your shoulder back, behind the plane of your body.
If you keep it normal, then you’re going to wind up hitting yourself in the head
or putting it over your head.
If you move it back, it goes straight across, like so.
From the side, it looks like this.
The first partner takes 2 balls, one in each hand,
and throws behind their head to their partner’s closer hand.
The thrower should always be watching where the ball is going, even in the full pattern.
Both partners need to practice this on both sides.
Now both partners take one balls each
Both throw simultaneous behind the heads to each other.
Final step: each partner takes 2 balls. As in the previous step, both partners simultaneously throw a behind the head passes to each other.
But this time, rather than just catching the incoming ball, throw the 2nd ball over your shoulder and prepare for the 180.
Catch the pass, do a 180, catch the over the shoulder throw with your inside hand, and then catch your breath.
A quick note on footwork: notice that the two of us use opposite legs to pivot on.
To transition into this pattern from a normal 3 count is actually pretty simple.
Standing about 3 steps away from each other, do a couple passes of 3 count
Right after the 2nd pass, both partners step in with the same foot.
It may help to make the 2nd pass a bit longer and more outside than a normal one.
From here, you can start the pattern.
We just came up with this pattern in January.
Good luck, and thanks for watching!
